"R1250GSA for sale. Ultra low mileage, only been on one trip on gravel roads. Some minor scuffs from usual adventure riding."

I got this on whatsapp today...I couldnt figure out how the bike ended up on the other side of the gabion. I can see the "divut" o the embanlment but there doesnt seem to be a road above that.

Very odd and I can only think the bike is totalled, hence the lack of sympathy..

It could be a recovery by the insurance who have already written it off ..who knows

I doubt anyone would treat their expensive bike that that without a story behind it, but at face value it seems excessive to just pull it over like that

agree

and subscribed for that context hopefully.

(was the bike actually dead? I somersaulted my GS once and it was fine, bar a lot of cosmetics off course)

Yes I was thinking Sani Pass
Even if insurance had written it off, there is still value in spares and surely insurance still sells the leftovers, that move just made less leftovers

I am hoping one of you puppies knows these chaps and the story behind it

Screen looked intact prior, bike also looked pretty much ok from what I could see. prior to this recovery move

Na, that's not how insurance works, well my insurance anyway, i cant speak for the whole industry .. insurance companies are not in the business of selling bike parts, they will scrap the bike and the owner keeps the wreckage.

If it was our bike we probably would have taken the insurance claim and fixed the bike, or sell the wreck off in parts etc.. a lot of people really don't have the time to do that so they sell the wreck to a scrap dealer or bike salvage for a set amount irrespective of the damage

Some insurance companies do work this way on bikes. If they declare the bike uneconomical to repair, they will pay you the insured value and sell the wreck to someone like Acme Salvage.  They will however give you the option to "buy" the wreck back and fix it yourself, but usually only if there is no outstanding HP.

Fair enough, however, will a place like ACME pay the same price for a written off 1250 that only has engine failure and a 1250 thats been dragged over a stone wall and dragged behind a bakkie?

My thinking is no, surely the engine failure one will cost more as its got a lot of salvageable parts still
Or do please like ACME have some sort of agreement to buy all at scrap value regardless of condition?

Either way that heartsore, I would have given my left nut for that bike

The price you pay for insurance bikes are a persentage of he value. Regardless of the damage ! What you loose on some you make up on others!

That bike is fucked. Written off. Basically junk. Don't feel for things without feeling. That's what insurance is for.
