:thumleft: :thumleft:I have a space made especially for something red in my shed.
650s are cheaper.
650s are available.
Looks the business
Will last forever
2012 last model year in SA
Have to part with cash

300s are liquid cooled
300s are lighter
300s are lower.
2021 and newer
Can finance

So do I pull the trigger on a 650 or continue sending emails into the great abiss known as Honda Dealers

The XR650L is tall and top heavy if you are short like me. The CRF300L is light and nimble.
The 650 is a bit faster on open road.
You have to spend a bit to de-smog and get rid of that horrible OEM exhaust on the 650. The 300 sounds ok out of the box and the exhaust looks ok.
650 is not light on fuel. The 300 is.
650 eats rear tires.
650 simple and air cooled.
300 nice and modern.

Only reason I would go for the 300 over the 650 is because of the 650's size.
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can

A Honda salesman told me we might get it, but I am not sure what the additional R even means. Probably “Road” with longer service intervals and longer warranty.
Anyway I have since bought a 650L so that part of the original post, as far as I am concerned, has been answered.
Its all hypothetical from here in for me.

Congrats, best off road I ever owned - just too tall for me.  :thumleft:

I doubt it, unless Honda can get round the no ABS rule the same way KTM do

Are you saying ABS is required on new bikes now?
What about the Chinese bikes?

I was in the same position as you, test rode the 300, but pulled the trigger on a 650.

The 650 is not as refined and "new", but I am loving mine and know I made the right choice

I had the same thoughts 2 years  ago ...

Here we had the choice of   DR 650 and the DRz 400 , Kawasaki Klr 650 ,Klx 250 . Honda 250 l   ..Yamaha wr 250 ,wr450 and TTR 250 and then the XT 660 ..

I chose the WR250 R and have had great trips on it .. Cheap to run , Hight service intervals and you can ride them hard all day long ........I have only heard of one WR250r motor that shat itself ...  Check out   ridingwithtom ..

They are sold roadworthy here but the last ones to be build are for sale now ,.....

Small bikes are not for everyone but they are heaps of fun

not in SA but in most of the rest of the world yes, and our bikes usually fall under one of those countries from a market perspective….

Here in NZ they are also compulsory to have ABS on all new bikes down to 250 cc... starts end of November 2021

Lots of DR 650  ,DRz 400 new bike going cheap ... you can still buy them new after that date but cannot put them on the road .....
