Does anyone know how many SA bike riders there are?
None I know about.  Closest to home is 203  Ingo WALDSCHMIDT from Windhoek, Namibia.  Great guy - worth all our support.

Cars:  Geniel de Villiers driving, Ralph Pitchford navigating for another VW, Alfie and his German mate driving a buggy.  2 wheel drive, Porche motor.  After testing the car in Europe earlier Alfie said to me: "Its not a winner, but it is a finisher"  They are doing very well up to now - lets all hold thumbs for our boys!

That guys knees must be made of jelly. Can anyone imagine sitting on that for a few hours and standing on it over the rough stuff, could be a big no no.

Dangerous to say the least, one of the big trucks wouldn't even see you or your dust trail.

The dust is insane... I do not see how they can continue mixing the 4 types of competitors like they have. Someone is going to get run over... >:(

Mixing bikes, cars and trucks on a single gravel path with that amount of dust is plain reckless and stupid imo - its a matter of time before the next tragic accident.  I'm slowly loosing interest in the Dakar.  At least in the African desert the 'path' was wide and 'unmarked'.  Expecting that amount of mixed racers to share a road 5m wide at speed and with that amount of dust is complete madness - reminds me of the running of the bulls in Spain.  Absurd...?

the original Dakar also had dusty roads in places. I was initially disappointed when they changed the venue but all the "magic" is still there and the roads will change on a daily basis. Those works prepared KTM's look like a million bucks!
Dont ponder about the meaning of life. Plan the next ride

I think the South American terrain suits the 450's more. They have had good results in the Baja and Oz Safari Rally. With factory backing and good riders they can win it.

I've been catching the action on one of the German sports channels here in France. They seem to have pretty good coverage. There is also a daily clip to download off the website too.
Trying to find more to download but so far no such luck...
For dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
