Getting a Motorcycle Licence in the UK!!!
« on: October 26, 2021, 06:52:58 pm »
I've just seen this. Can you believe it!?

The cheapest you're going to get a licence is R14k. If you're starting from scratch it can cost you up to R43k!

Imagine failing and having to do it again?!

That's R14k  to ride a Duke 390 .................... you wanna ride my bike you gotta pay R28k.

Or, if you're from SA, you can buy me a pint at the pub and I'll let you take it for a spin .......................  :thumleft:

Fortunately my lad was 23 when he went over to London with his A license, he just swapped out his ZA license for a UK one

What would have happened if he'd been 22 with an A license?

I can't believe they'd swap a full A license for an A2 .................................... Actually, knowing the English, they probably would ..............  ::)

I went through something similar to get my EU bike license. To make matters worse, had a KTM 500 in the garage. And I failed twice. Much is life, now I can go wild but rather stay away from public roads, as much as possible.
Have bike, will ride.

You are in Belgium?
How much did it cost you?

I also bought the 990S before having a license.
Started from scratch and it cost me just over €1000

I remember doing my full licence in London.  Did the CBT and another 2 or 3 days training. I think it cost me about 400 or 500 gbp at the time.  That was around 1998.

It was money well spent and no regrets doing it.

I don't begrudge the quality of the training required to become competent.

I also know that converting to Rands is folly.

Still, compared to many places, these requirements raises the barrier to entry to a point that I imagine bother motorcycle manufacturers?

When I past my UK test in 1974 I was woken from a terrible hangover by a woman asking if I could come in for my test as there was a cancellation that morning. I had previously filled in the form and paid my 10 shillings and sixpence a few days before. I went down to the test center on my Honda C70 where I was asked to drive around the block and drive next to the examiner while he walked along. I was then given an unrestricted licence that I use to this day, accepted in RSA and only recognised recently as a full bike licence in Australia (where they are full of shit and really don't want hoons on bikes or silly old senior citizens wobbling off of them full stop.)

… and it’s not just for bikes, or in the UK. Two Saffers mates of mine just arrived in Holland where for R33k they will have to re-do their car drivers licenses. Crazy!
1978. It's 6am, mid winter...two up on a XL 185S ... off to my first casino ever with all of R40 and we've got a full tank of fuel, so enough to get there we reckon.... that's determination...

Cannot remember how much it cost as one pays per hour. Minimum eight hours of riding and bike hire. Do think it made me more aware on the road. Just another stepping stone. Was not going to ride around for a year with a learners sticker.

Fwiw, if they are here in Netherlands on the skilled migration scheme and qualify for the 30% ruling,  then they can convert their licence.  I guess they know this already....?

Over here in Italy one can unfortunately not directly convert one's SA licences, and it cost me 1100 € just to do my car (B) licence, (despite my having an EC1 licence from SA, besides the B licence, and A licence for a motorcycle).

This covered the costs of a driving school - for the theory lessons and passing the theory test, before having the practical lessons and another practical driving test.
It is recommended that one do these tests through a driving school, rather than try hiring a bike (and the communication system needed to do the test).

So there I sat at 61 with all the young 18 year olds in a theory class!!!

It would have cost me another 600 € for the A licence, after having the practical classes and the practical test - apparently another theory test is not needed.

I always feel a bit "cheated", as the Italians can go to SA, and just have their licences converted directly without any practical test, as they would have to drive on the left hand side of the road! There seems to be no reciprocal agreement between Italy and SA to directly convert licences like in many other European countries. If I had come from north Africa, or even South Korea I could have directly converted my drivers licences!

I was living in London and wanted to buy a bike around 2000.  Came back to SA did my leaners and Licence within three weeks over the December holiday period went back to UK and converted it. I have still got it somewhere - i should try and keep it safe because as far i can remember they don't expire.

Sheeeyit! If it was like this back in '61 I would never have become a biker!  :eek7:

16 years old, 10 shillings (50p) for a provisional licence and take to the roads. Instruction? What instruction? Just take your test within 6 months or buy another provisional.
I took my test and passed of course - how could you fail? Just read that number plate over there, Ride up the road and round the block, out of the testers sight  ??? :ricky:
Come back and do an 'emergency' stop  ;) and there you go boy, You have a full licence.  :deal:

The bike you could begin with as a learner was anything up to a 1000cc Vincent Black Shadow - if you were that rich - and provided it carried L plates of course.  :lol8:
It was shortly after I got my licence that the shit started and they brought in a law that you could only ride a 250 until after passing your test. Suddenly there was a flood of high performance sports 250's on the market, with an identical 350cc version, indistinguishable apart from a swappable badge.
Succumb not to the erosion of those born of unconsecrated union.

"Two Wheels, an engine and a place to sit." What more do you need?
