Certainly makes the GS "challenge" look like a Sunday afternoon nap.

Unrelated, but why did Camel exclusively use Landrovers for their annual Camel Challenge?
If they'd use Landcruisers it wouldn't have been a challenge anymore!

:lol8:  Or what about the Ineos Grenadier? Awesome looking vehicle, in SA next year..

It's really been epic!

Great group of guys.

Long tough days.

Not a single mechanical on the bikes besides punctures! That's 4 Quests now with nothing breaking or going wrong, despite some very good efforts at throwing them down the road and rocks.

That's 67 bikes doing 2500km of hardcore adventure riding each without a single mechanical.

2 big crashes yesterday at high speed and not a scratch on the bikes!
Somedays, life's like a middlemannetjie.

Honda Quest Day 7

The longest run homeward bound, 397km almost entirely off-road. After the long, tough days, no-one is fresh. Everyone is carrying some form of wear and tear, some more than others. However, the teams have acquired skills, forged friendships and settled into a rhythm.

On the bike front, the Africa Twins have not given a moments mechanical worry. We have had numerous front punctures though. It’s a function of the tough routes and standard tubes. The tubes can cope with every day running, but to be fair, they’ve been asked a little more than just “everyday running”!

From Uitspan’s little school house, we stopped off at a giant Quiver Tree Forest, the first of many we saw today. But here are some particularly fine specimens.

For large sections where the navigation was easy the pace was quicker. Over the Knersvlakte with its massive skies and Boesmanlands’ wide-open roads, the group made great time. Watching them ride side by side for company on the gravel tracks, it’s clear they’ve become so very attuned to each other.

There were few breaks to stretch the legs, a stroll around the interesting Fred Turner Windmill Museum, a cooldrink at the Ganaga Lodge with its magnificent views over the Ganaga Mountains and Pass.

That is how most of the marathon day went, navigating and reeling off the kilometres. At the stops,  within the normal banter and laughing, there’s a sense of wistfulness that that can be felt too. This marathon stretch southwards towards home is another step towards an ending of sorts. The finish line is approaching in a few days, as it inevitably must. Once absolute strangers, now bonded brothers, will have to step off their Honda dream enablers and return to their worlds, forever changed. It’s the purpose of Adventuring; when done well, it helps us make sense of ourselves and our worlds. It’s no sin to wish it never to end though.

Unfortunately, there were two tumbles towards the end of the day, Shaun Engelbrecht suffered a puncture at speed on a gravel corner and if it had not been for his armoured pressure suit and skills acquired during Quest, he’d probably be in hospital. He escaped with not a scratch. His bike too, showed no signs of the accident.

Peter Loubser, the one instructor, hit a deep rut in thick dust, instantly bringing him down. Though he still made it to camp, he was much the worse for wear – a serious sprain but luckily nothing suspected broken.
It seems just yesterday we were in the deserts of the Richtersveld.  Tonight, we’re in Perdekloof in the Tankwa Karoo under stars. The finish line beckons.

Honda Quest Day 8

The penultimate day! This morning, for a change, it was cloudless and warm.

At the briefing, Hardy let the teams know that there was almost nothing between the top teams with everything to lose. All 7 teams this year are very strong. There are no passengers.

There is a great sense of team. They may very well be up against each other officially, but there’s a good bond that’s developed across all. Every morning so far, someone is presented with a large wooden spoon – it’s an honour to win it as it’s the “Spirit of Quest” according to the other riders. The other, a clown tie is a fun one, given for doing something silly or embarrassing.

Today’s route started as soon as we left Perdekloof with a tough navigation exercise; the Tankwa Karoo National Park is littered with trails, the ones we travelled on were vague and little visited. The Tankwa can be at times surreal with another worldliness to it. Dark shale fields between weathered red hued sedentary mountains with the pastel blue Cederberg Mountains beckoning us to join them off in the distance. In this harsh world, an Ostridge and Gemsbok raced across our path to add to the occasion. It’s a very special place.

Making the R355 we turned temporarily North to make our way to the Biedouw valley. We’d been warned that the Doring River was in flood and the crossing would not be navigable.

Considering that we’d just come through the furnaced shales of Tankwa Karoo, it was a bit surreal wading into the refreshing river not 40 minutes later, floating a bike across with a homemade pontoon just enough to carry one bike.
This is was an exercise in teamwork across the teams. At this late stage, sinking a bike would be a disaster as the team’s chances of winning will almost certainly be lost.

The Cedarberg is a craggy, rough, eminently picturesque backdrop to the final stretch to camp. The mood was high and despite a few more punctures, riding into camp was both high with accomplishment and a little sad that this would be the last evening together.

Tomorrow, in just over a 100km, Honda Quest winners will be announced. It’s been an absolute epic!
