Which adventure helmet????
« on: November 16, 2021, 12:03:31 pm »
It is time to replace my helmet. I have really enjoyed my Xlite X-551 but it is getting a bit long in the tooth now and the rubbers are starting to perish. Also older than the suggested 5 year life span. his thread is not to ask which is the best helmet to consider as it will just open a big can of worms :ricky:
What I am asking is feedback on what helmet fellow Wild Dogs have and what the likes and dislikes are of that particular helmet. Will assist in giving me a better overall view of what is on the market.
Thanks in advance.

I moved from your exact helmet to a O'Niel Sierra 2 and then to a Bell MX9 Adv.
The Sierra was just trash. It looks pretty cool but the build quality was terrible, the inner sun-visor scratched on the inside of the helmet within a week...just avoid. There are a number of copies of it being sold under all sorts of names.

The Bell was the opposite experience. Yes, it's a noisy helmet but it's very open and well-ventilated. More so than the Nolan but with the same wind noise. I've had mine for nearly 3 years now and the build quality is holding up very well. Still feels like a new helmet. Mine is the "Snow" version (I wanted the colour) and doesn't have MIPS, but it's exactly the same as new newer versions.

My next helmet will be something quieter though. The Bell is great when you're fighting sand in the heat but earplugs are a requirement on the highway.

That is the challenge - so many to choose from. At the moment leaning towards the Airoh Commander or Arai Tour X4.

I use the Shoei Hornet ADV helmet. Think the same one Brett Tcaks uses.

Haven’t used anything else before so cant compare it but I like it a lot.

The helmet accommodates glasses, sun or normal. So that helps. It handles wind very well. Standing in the wind, I never get the strong wooosh from the wind as it picks up the peak of the helmet. Side ways or while looking up into the wind, it doesn’t put a lot of strain on my head.

It is a tad noisy though. Noise goes away when I open my visor.

I am very happy with my Bell MX9.

And I must follow, if I can

Now I again cannot wear the Arai TX3 Dual  or 4 - it presses in the wromg places for me - in the end I bought an AGV AX-8 Dual - and I liked it so much, when I needed another helmet, I bought the AGV AX-8 Dual EVO - and I believe they are on the AX-9 now.
Whats to like - incredible field of vision, its the widest field I know of - extremely comfortable, removable inner, to wash, and its incredibly light at 900g or so?
Whats not to like - the AX-8 suffers from a weird vibration of the peek at post-highway speeds (not that you would do that, obviously) and it flexes and eventually cracks and breaks at the mount on either side. There is no centre support due to the visor. I replaced 3 peeks on my first helmet (OK, I broke one when I dropped the helmet on it) and I glued 2 strips of plastic in the newer EVO as soon as I got it, never had a moments trouble since then - eith vibration or cracking.
I also believe this was rectified on the AX-9 - I have not seen one to confirm though.
I also use an Arai MX helmet with goggles and it fits perfectly - so no idea what the TX problem is....

Talk about field of vision, I can’t see the side of my visor on my Shoei Hornet ADV. So it is also really wide

Very happy with my Airoh Carbon Commander.
It’s comfortable, quiet, light weight and doesn’t break the bank.

+1 for the Arai.

I’ve had that and the new Shoei Hornet.

The Shoei is a bit better at high speed tar and ease of visor change, but everything else the Arai is better. Try one on and every other helmet you ever pick up will just feel a little plasticky and cheap.

Stay away from the Shoei Hornet Adv Navigate

At first it's amazing but after an hour or so, I (and other owners from a Google search) experience a sharp pain in the one ear.
On day 3 of my last 6day trip, my ear hurt so badly, i could barely remove my helmet after a days riding.

So now I'm sitting with a moer expensive helmet that I can't use.

+100.

Worth the cost as well.

As long as you have an Arai shaped head.  :thumleft:
