Help me choose something Naked
« on: November 24, 2021, 12:53:40 pm »
I had a Kawasaki z750 until a few months ago, when I happened upon a 990 adventure. The adventure is great but with a problem shoulder I really have issues with how high the handlebars are, the only way it is tolerable is if I sit right up on the tank.
Once the thought came to mind that this bike is not working for me, I started to realize many other things, like the fact that I wanted a second set of rims 17/19 for the road, and then it hit me, I really like sporty riding and it doesnt make sense to turn the adventure into something it is not.

So now while my bike is up for sale, I have time to think about what I want.
Last year I test rode a street triple 675r for a friend who was interested in it and immediately after I rode a z1000 because I was intrigued.
Needless to say the entire time riding the z1000 I was wishing that I was back on the 675, it was so engaging and good lawd the noise with the arrow pipes was just  :drif:
Anycase I was thinking I should just get a 675, but then I happened upon the idea of a 990 superduke.

Theres a few reasons why I think the 675 will be a better fit but primarily it is the fuel consumption, I will be able to ride it hard all the time without having to worry much for fuel, I know what a drinking problem the 990 can have.
I am just wondering if coming from a 990 adventure the little 675 might feel a bit flat.

I am also open to other suggestions, budget will be around R80000, the main use of the bike will be to the gym and back which is about 30km over oukaapseweg and to the shops which is about 7 km and then a weekly meeting in the office.

I've always wanted a 990 Superduke.

Fuel consumption was never the 990's strong point though, you're right.

I think the 675 might be a better all-rounder, but I reckon the Superduke will stick it's hands down your pants and give you a thrill more often

675

Once you start looking at the V motors you will loos the free reving nature of the trip and inline fours where your roots are.
The V motors are different, they are fun and torquey but not smooth like a trip or 4.
Your money but I would go that route
I am still very much in love with the Z750 which I rode dor many years

It's a pitty how bad the chassis is on the z750, it has a divine motor, I swapped out the rear shock for one from a zx10 but then the swing arm would flex, it really could've been a great bike with a bit more focus on the handling.

Each time I've test driven a subaru, they stuck their hands down my pants and I ended up with money pits ;D

I had a 790 Duke, it was a very fun bike, light, nimble, good power and excellent handling. Second hand also good value for money

I am biased. The aprilias have an 11k rpm limit and run hard to the limiter but you are correct that there is lots of low and mid torque.

I would love one of these, just not sure I could find one in the budget.

I would be open to an MT09 but not so sure about the suspension on them, I have heard it's a weak point.

The ergonomics might be an issue with my shoulder, but I will see if I can go sit on one somewhere. :thumleft:

Have never heard bad reps about the MT-07. I considered one when they came out but it is a bit too upright.

What about the Z800? A bit heavy but a lekker bike. Also a big leap forward on the Z750 on which is based. They fall in your price range and only need a tail tidy and a pipe like about all road bikes.

Some Ducati Monsters also in that range.

MT07 is a lekker bike but way different to lets say Z750 and the Triumph tripples.
If the Vtwin nature of the adventure bike did not tick the boxes then the Dukes and other twins and twin like bike (MTís) will not do because they are vibeíy and makes the power somehow more brutal, that power punchí
I personally had a good relationship with the Centurion Yamaha guys back in the day and test rode a number of bikes while being a biker medic and Ďkilling time.
The MT07 impressed me a lot and it was the only bike ever I could wheely and keep it up for a while without feeling uneasy. However, regardless of hoe much I liked it, the Inline fours remained my favourite and of course triumph trip in many forms.
They are completely different and I prefer the smooth pick up of these motors.
The Z range is just so reliable and a safe and sensible choice albeit a vit boring directly compared to some of the Vís mentioned.

I do enjoy the engine characteristics of the 990 hence why I am considering a superduke, although the power is abrupt, it doesnt just fall off which I found with the duke 690 and mt07.
As great as the Z's are I find inline 4 a bit of a waste on the street, I find the triples an excelent mix of on demand power without falling flat too soon.
I think the fact that I prefered the street triple to a late model z1000 means I will definitely prefer it to a z800.

Does anyone know how stiff the superduke r is in comparison to the superduke and if one can just soften it up a bit with suspension settings? It seems the big forum for the superdukes shut down.
