With the petrol price as it is, I'm burning R300 a day in getting to work and back. My round trip is about 100km per day, and half of that is on bad dirt roads. So a road bike is out of the question, as is a small car. For this reason I have to commute in a 4x4.

The idea is to save money, so I don't want to buy something new or expensive. I want to avoid HP installments and high insurance premiums. Bikes within my price range are:

BMW 1150GS
Early model 1200GS
BMW F800GS
Yamaha XTZ660
Trans Alp 650 or 700
Maybe a XR/DR650?

What else can you guys recommend? I've done the trip a few times on my WR450, but it gets a little stressful dodging the cops, as I have to drive through Struisbaai and Agulhas. I'm getting too old to get chased by the cops. Even though I smoke them, it's not as much fun as it used to be. Also, the WR is not made for being ridden throttle wide open for about 60km perday, every day.
