690 vs 990 KTM ????
« on: January 13, 2009, 10:32:23 am »
watching the dakar you notice that the top 10 bikes are all 690 enduro's,,,,,my question is why not the 990 ???

i realise its lighter and easy to handle but that much more power the weight factor should be cancelled out if not better???

according to the commentators marc como is a big guy,,,not sure if he is as big as i am,,,,but im suprised he doesnt race with a 990

so heres my question,,,,if i (with my body weight) wanted to buy a perfect enduro bike,,,should i take a 690 or the 990,,,,theres a considerable difference in price????

what good for the dakar riders and marc como is good for malgat????

Daar mag geen twee selinder bikes deelneem nie.

As die hoender in jou vasvlieg moet sy vere waai, maar dis darm ook nou nie nodig om in die hoenderhok in te klim nie.

what would the reason be for not allowing 2 cylinder big capacity bikes?

why not have say classes

singles < 600cc
singles > 600cc

and a open class - 990, 1200, etc  ???

They are limiting capacity for safety reasons,by the way there are a couple of 450`s up there as well!

The perfect ENDURO bike is a KTM 200, if you have the moola, if not KDX 200.  Maybe a KTM 300 if you have the balls, if not a KTM 250 (fourstroke).  Horses for courses.  Ask Sharkza - the one with the big balls.

If you want the perfect off road bike, well I do not know - sorry

Straight and to the point, but wrong.

A lot of misinformation here.

Multi cylinder bikes are limited to 450cc.
Singles have no limit.

The reason is safety, too many people were dying flying 200 kph across the desert.

there is also speed penalties. I think the max speed allowed is 160kmh. If you currently ride a 750 Honda, go for the 990.

It is the speed limit.
Why take a heavier bike if both can only go 160.

There was a limit on max speed for a year or two. Not any longer. :)

Uhmmm??? I may be totally wrong here, but I somehow remember seeing on the entry list that a guy entered on a 990? Think he dropped out on the first day. Where would that fit in with the rules then? Did he have to use two straws as inlet restrictors maybe?  :D

Fully fuelled the 690's as used in the Dakar come in at around 210kg methinks.
- Shark, what is the mandatory amount of fuel you need to carry?

And - if you're big (100kg +) I would say go for the 990.

I like that 690 ... a lot  :drif:

I weigh just 70 kayjees - so the 690 would be right for me. Only problem is I'm kinda short (5'8").

My question is - what's it like as an adventure tourer? Can panniers be added etc, etc?

The girly F800gs is not for me - way too pretty  :pot:
