I wouldn't want to do the dakar on a 1200....

You wouldn't make it either.... :pot:

Thanks for the post Katundu.
This is the rules above.

No multi's over 451, and the difference between Marathon and Super Production is the Marathon guys have to keep the same engine number for the whole race.
The Super Production guys can swap out the whole motor if they wish.

I like that 690 ... a lot  :drif:

I weigh just 70 kayjees - so the 690 would be right for me. Only problem is I'm kinda short (5'8").

My question is - what's it like as an adventure tourer? Can panniers be added etc, etc?

The girly F800gs is not for me - way too pretty  :pot:

the 690 e is ok for back yard riding, but believe me, you dont want to sit on it for 500km to get to a destination. Better then buy a trailer as well. Go for the new 990. There is a 3 models available for 2009, standard, R with higher suspension and a standard with lower suspension.

I'd rather have root canal than buy a trailer  :xxbah:

I currently own the dr650 - my first bike. I haven't done any real touring yet with it. :patch:

The dr's seat is also a plank - but I think the 690's is even harder! I suppose KTM will come out with a 690 adventure one fine day to replace the 640. Here's hoping!

For now the dr is way better than my riding skill level, so I'm pretty chuffed.

The 990 would be way too big for me and I prefer good ol' thumpers anywayz

ditto.....

getting past the seat comfort is like spitting in the wind

quite frankly i dont think seat comfort is debateable and in some way its good that it limits you,,,

when doing long riding i like leaving at sunrise and doing at least 2 - 3 hours good riding,,,just something about the early morning,,,,then a breakfast and a rest and another 3 hours and my day is over,,,500 km under the belt

so what do you do now???? mingle with the locals,,,,and i love riding the last hour looking for a place to sleep over

or otherwise i suppose you can do it standing up like the dakarians

often its over too soon ...

another thing.....

poppipants previously said in this thread that both these bikes can do 160 km/h,,,,

so again i ask,,,whats the point in buying the 990,,,

i still aint convinced that buying the 990 above the 690 is the better option,,,

can the 690 not do the same as the 990 and even more considering the lightness and easy manourverability????

i just looking at it from a technical point of view and having it as an 2nd bike or replacing ??? naah forget it,,,will keep the AT doesnt matter what,,,,,we'll just make space in the garages

Soooo,,,longterm i think a second bike,,,,either a katoom or a bm???

but lets not bring the bm into the equation,,,im just thinking what ktm??? for the time being

If you talking 690 rally as in the Dakar or even 660 rally as in the Dakar and 990 adv ,Price is a good place to start off with a comparison if you need any persuasion to buy the 990 I think Luislang has one for R95 000  :thumleft:

You're talking big moola for the 690 Rally. Used (if you can get one locally) between R 220k and R250k (estimated). New one in the region of R 300k.  :o

'fraid so. farkin nice bike but farkin expensive and...

unfortunately a production version of the 690 Rally seems to be a pipe dream at this stage. KTM have said they will launch accessories for the 690 Enduro during 2009 to "adventurise" it.

If the 690 is a single, why does it have twin tail pipes?

Any idea when they will be available in SA and how much?

:drif: I would pay good bucks for that. Hopefully they retain the kickstart/battery combo. I think this is the bike (not the enduro) that is performing so well in the dakar. This looks like an adventure. NICE!!!
