Kilroy you just discribed my bike perfectly..... i also have tik tik up a hill when its hot in the midrange with an aftermarket pipe and pillion...

Is there a connection here?

Well, I am "very much" interested in this thread. I also have this tik..tik sound on my bike. Sometimes its softer, sometimes more obvious!
Our local agent (Donford) checked it out and adjusted the tappets /clearance of some sort. Seemed solved at the time, but now it is back again. Somebody said it might by noize coming from the injectors?
The bike is a 2004 model with "only" 7700km. Had a complete fluid change at 6200km
The sound is a high pitch tik-tik - simular to the sound of a leak on a car exhaust manifold, but I see no evidence of a leak on the two exhaust gaskets.

On the way down everything was fine.

Is that black thing over the plug the coil?

Does a lean mixture not ignite easier than a overly rich one? You may need to richen the mix to get the preignition sorted?

ping or preignition is not going to be a faint tik-tik-tik sound

ping is when the piston is still on the upstroke and the petrol ignites and explodes before the pistons has passed TDC

so the explosion is trying to force the piston down but the piston cant to down as it is still going up

very bad for the engine and continue pinging will damage and destroy the engine

you will have very bad performance as the engine would be working against itself

and you will hear it - normally pinging happens at low RPM under heavy load

pinging at 5000rpm thats a bit strange

does the bike still perform as it should when it makes this noise

if it does then i doubt its ping $:-\$

My bike performs fine when you hear the sound....

I've felt it ping due to being in the wrong gear and the revs were to low, it makes the whole bike shake.... this is not what i feel in the midrange revs while hearing the tik tik sound...

I must add i am a perfectionist and very full of shit... so i'll investigate all funny sounds... maybe its normal....

It could very well be injector noise... i've heard the same sound once on a BMW car... 325i.... injectors went tik tik tik as it idled...

I also think it is not pinging. (Obviously only a gues) .No it does not loose power.
I will now monitor it more closely from now on. hot vs cold noize, left vs right and try and spot the origin allthough I am "versigtig" for a high voltage spark to my ear! What I find strange is that it is not constant, which feels like some control related issue?!

ps. should this be moved to a new topic as in 1200GS tik...tik?

exactly - ping the engine is trying to blow itself up - so you will feel and hear it trying to self destruct

if its a faint tik-tik-tik it could be valve noise but i doubt it - you dont normally hear the valves unless the bike is at idle $:-\$

i think its probably the injectors - working overtime to push as much petrol in as possible to cater for the high rpm and the load

on a ktm or something similar the injectors are sitting inside the bike onder the seat and tank so you wont hear it

but on the boxer the injectors are out in the open and it might just be the source of the sound

My car pings at 3-4k rpm on the highway due to the low octane rating, the fuel map was designed for a bit higher. The performance is a little bit worse, but not a lot. So it can happen throughout the rev range.
