If you go there again go pitch your tent at the remains of the old jail. They kept the Italian prisoners of war there while they built the road.

Ek gaan saam!

there is a place called Kookfontein nearby where you can swim in a plaasdam and stay over in a tiny chalet.
It belongs to the park but they don't advertise it so it's pretty secluded and dead quiet

Did this pass early in January.
It was horrible, by far the worst piece of dirt we had done on the whole 4500KM trip.
The road was corrugated. I don't mean parts of the road, I mean the whole thing. In some places it was so bad that the bike was jumping under me.
Unless someone does something drastic to maintain this road, I suggest you give it a skip. My suspicion is that they scrape it just before the flower season for the tourists and leave it to rot for the rest of the year.

Hi Chris - just a slight correction. The prisoners who stayed in that building were local criminals from Robben Island and not Italian POW's.

Watch out for scorpions amongst the rocks of the old jail - they are plentiful and its a long pull to the hospital at Springbok if you get stung! :-\

There was a story of the warden or a guard at that jail who fell in love across the "colour line", and ended up killing himself. But I forget the whole story, it was a bit before my time up there.
