Quick ride through the Karkloof
« on: October 23, 2006, 03:46:22 pm »
Monday morning and the weather is perfect in the Natal Midlands. Kids are off to school and my wife Toni has the day off coz it's mid-term break here in Kzn.

Do I feel like working? Nah! Would much rather go ride my bike, so after some subtle persuasion, Toni and I are off to the Karkloof, an area about 10 km away that I have not been to in a while.

Toni and bike about 10km into the ride at about 08h00.

Found this lovely deserted road through the forest to explore

[/img]
Turning back because we did not have permission to be there? Of course not, getting permission retrospectively is a much better idea.

[/img]
After a very pleasant ride through the forest, came to a clearing at the top of the mountain, with a path leading to a fantastic viewsite over the Karkloof.

[/img]
and this amazing little dam high up on the mountain.

Back down the mountain.
[/img]
Out of the Karkloof and arrived at Craigie Burn Dam

[/img]
From there through to Mooi River and on to Nottingham Road where we stopped for breakfast.

From Nottingham Road a lovely twisty tar road through the Midlands and back home by 12h00. I should definitely do this more often.[/img]

How can I be lost if I've got nowhere to go?

Karkloof is fantastic.
Also been on the foefieslide, and went swimmin in that little dam in your pic (above the little waterfall)
I also ramped a Uno there, but that's another story altogether.

That's a beautiful area, maybe going there in Dec for a bit of camping.

Thanks for the report!

PS: I like the ammo-crate you use as top-box. :D
I did the same on our Nam trip, much to the enjoyment of the other okes. :P

Thanks for the pics.  I have taken a ride on the Hilton College estate?  it should be pretty good as they have been fixing it up over the past couple years.

If I am in Basel, you up for a beer? My concept of where you are might mean Durban to JHB?

Not quite Durbs to JHB, but far enough apart to make it a bit improbable. We are talking about a 3 hour drive... Damn, can't u tell the bosses that you need to conduct your business in Geneva?
