NO MORE TARRING SANI
« on: May 31, 2009, 06:52:38 am »
Just returned from SANI. Tuesday 26 May 2009 during a meeting in Himmville the locals were informed that the tarring of SANI is scrapped due to environmental impact study findings and projected budget. If the pas will be tarred it must, according to law, be done as prescribed by the environmental impact study findings and recommendations. The projected cost will run into the billions according to the strict recommendations not to damage the world heritage site.  The first phase (currently busy with) is also unlikely to be completed since it is 2-years over completion time and budget has been reallocated. I spoke with a land surveyor who worked on the design team (stayed at his guest house) who said it was a pipe-dream from the beginning since the pass would have to be closed. Local tour operators are happy...and wild dogs!

Glad to hear it, although I think that, in reality, it was never going to happen.
It's a friggin' motorcycle, it's not supposed to be comfortable, quiet or safe. The windnoise is supposed to hurt your ears, the seat should be hard and riding it should make you scared every now and then. Suck it up. -- Scary Gary Mc

Who was the surveyor; KMcD?

Mad project but I suspect more to do with more water schemes in Lesotho than anything else. Also mad stuff for the taxpayer - why not just clean the water that gets dirtied?

Don't delay. The Barkbuster you put up for me last week was severely crash tested and it work! SANI is stunning but the last 400m was too much for me solo. The GS8 just became too heavy to pick up after every 100m. Going Down was a picnic. I will do my RR later since other can learn from my blapse. DO NOT RIDE SANI WITH THE DUEL PURPOSE TYRES!!! The rocks doesn't allow it.

Got to agree, momentum is your friend!

Did Sani in the pouring rain, two up fully loaded on Bridgestone Trail wings. No stop and no fall. Also went up to Tiffendells Ski resort like that. Just gotta keep the throttle steady and keep going!

Sad to hear. I think the tarring of the pass would have given a huge economic boost to the residents at the top. It would improve the lives of those that use the road every day at the expense of the few that like it for its coolness and bragging rights.

Also did Tiffendels 2-up fully loaded also with TW's. Up the one side of the mountain, down the other side. Stopped twice. once to get the missus to lean forward and not against the top box like she was in the lounge at home, and on the way down, just to give the brakes a rest. Did not fall though. Looking forward to doing Sani now that it will remain au-natural. Great news!

LOL CR....

Was the same here...also had to ask for the lean forward. Man that road is STEEEP! Used a lot of engine compression on way down to help brakes!
