Solo down in the dumps
« on: June 01, 2009, 03:05:36 pm »
After seeing the ride report on the Maraisburg mine dumps I decided to do a bit of scouting at the mine dumps on the outskirts of Benoni to see if I they were rideable. I had heard that the MX guys, quads and 4x4s used to frequent them but wanted to see if a dual sport could handle there.

What was supposed to be a quick reccy turned into 4hrs of fun. What I found is the most awesome place to mess around, practise soft sand / dune type riding with a few jumps thrown in too. The sand is very soft like beach sand so if your bike falls there is no damage at all. Also because you know this you are much more confident and what I came to realise is that confidence is everything with the sand. If you are tentative it will eat you up.

After a short while I was trying power slides and bombing up some of the smaller dunes.

The only downside here is that it was a bit dusty and there were quite a few quads, MX bikes, 4x4s and even some sandboarders. I was the only dual sport there.

I had an absolute blast and have attached a few pics of the ride.

looks like a very very nice play ground
There are no short cuts to anywhere worth going!
Performance is paramount, niceties only exist if it doesn't affect performance.

Don't rush it, it's helmet time you need, not a destination. Take it easy.

Pretty impressive seeing those quads ride right up the highest part of the dune.

In light of the challenge set to ride a DS bike up Koos se Klim at the Rock, I wonder if anyone could do this part of the dune on a dual sport  :mwink:

Chatting to some of the regulars there it seems early mornings and late afternoons are best - gets hectic from around 11/12.

I was there from around 14:00 on Sunday and it wasn't too bad and from 16:00 it was fairly quiet.

If any dualsport is going to get up there, it will be the 950 SE!

Dustdevil, after riding Deane's 950 SE two weeks ago, I may have to concede that you are right. It feels like a 300 on steroids. Amazing fantastic wonderful awesome bike. Oh, if I did not make it clear, let me say that I really like it.

Got to take the time to do the things you wouldn't normally do.

I would just caution about riding these places solo.

This particular spot is packed with quads, MX and 4x4s on weekend afternoons but do appreciate your point... :thumleft:
