BMW GS Eco 1000

What’s in a name? In this instance, BMW Motorrad is sure it is an event which will truly appeal to all owners of the legendary BMW GS motorcycle. No other bike has ever captured the spirit of true adventure touring as this motorcycle.

It all began in 1980 and the first production model of the R80 G/S. The biggest endurance motorcycle at the time, the R 80 G/S was ideally suited for road use and for tackling rough terrain. BMW thus paved the way in an entirely new market segment for large-displacement touring enduros. The R 80 G/S and its successor, the R 100 GS, quickly became remarkably successful machines in the BMW range. In particular, "serious" motorcyclists the world over regularly covered global distances and preferred BMW's enduro machines when riding through the desert terrain.

But it is not necessary to traverse faraway continents and rugged landscapes to fully appreciate the potential and capabilities of a BMW GS motorcycle, especially when one’s own country, South Africa, has so much to offer, so much to explore. And your next journey of exploration could be The BMW GS Eco 1000.

On a Spring day in late September 2009, several hundred BMW GS riders will commence a journey of exploration from the four corners of South Africa. Over a two day period each rider will cover a distance of 1000km, often on seldom travelled roads, culminating in a National Gathering of these intrepid riders and their machines.

And why “Eco”? Famous anthropologist, Margaret Mead, once said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has”. The BMW GS Eco 1000 will comprise such a group of GS owners who will give back to society and the environment through this event more than they have taken.

Registration will commence mid-July when you can visit your local dealer or the BMW Motorrad website: www.bmwmotorrad.co.za for more information
