Oil Sight Tube for DRZ?
« on: June 30, 2009, 09:32:06 am »
Hoezit

After looking at Redwolf's Pig that's for sale, I saw the oil sight tube thingy again.

Very handy for seeing your oil level without having to remove the dipstick.

The DRZ also has a dry sump with oil stored in the frame.

Can this mod be done on the Z?

Here is the pic stolen from Redwolf's for-sale-thread.

Thanks
Bus

I also want for a XR400 (and a XR600)
How does one go about doing this?

I know its quite a specialised job, not any nincompoop (thats me) can do it...

It involves the drilling of the top hole (not sure where the bottom of the tube goes) and ensuring that none of the filings/debris end up running through your motor. So as I understand there is a flushing action required as well.

But I will leave it at that, before I make myself really look stjoopit...

Hopefully Runner will chime in here with more than the obligatory "Ag Fok!!!"

I also wanted Runner to do this to my DRZ but looking at a DRZ vs XR frame it's going to be more difficult on the Z  :-\ Less space, flat areas and I think the XR alu frame is thicker which helps when inserting taps, the steel one on the DRZ will be thin me thinks.

And an XT660?
Alcohol is essentially natureís Leatt Brace Ė with it, you might not be able to move worth sh*t, but you can take a slam or two and be no worse for the wear.

"XR's only" used to sell the kit for the steel framed XR600r. Couldn't find it in their online katalog anymore...
Should be no big problem to do it on the DRZ - just make sure that all the metal cutting get removed.
Both fittigs mount to the front frame tube where the oil is stored. Use a heat resistant tube (Teflon?)!
I have bought the parts a few years ago (locally) but never found the time to actually do it... maybe it's time now!
Cheers
Mike

how does the oil tank in the frame connect to the engine?

is there funny valve or is it just a pipe?

if its just a pipe you can just tap into that pipe and have a new oil tank cap (dipstick) machined with a hole in it to connect the other end of the pipe to  ???

The whole thing sits down below the bashplate, all neatly layed out and in place. Extra fittings and pipes will just complicate things and snag on whatever you ride through. Checking oil on a drysump is a bit more tedious but just like anything else just check often and know your bike well, no problem  :thumleft:

I hate checking oil on the Z. I'm never quite sure where it is...
But I rather keep it overfilled than under...
