That most wonderful time of the year!
« on: November 04, 2006, 11:37:45 pm »

While you poor folks are heading into that time of year when you do a slowbake in your helmet, we in the frozen north head into that season called "this winter", as opposed to the other 2 seasons, "last winter" and "next winter". I headed out this morning under  clear and cool skies, about 12?ºF or -11?ºC, rode about 30 miles, mostly to get used to the handling of the studded trackmasters on snow and ice. Why yes, it is a bit different, not really any worse than sand, actually I like snow better than sand but we can debate that some other time!

There is a local road that gets enough use to pack down the snow but not so much as to clear it off. This was as good a place as any to get started on the relearning process. You can see where the studs are in the tires, the little white spots, they dig in nicely.

This is a view east, towards Pioneer Peak.

That went well, so I decided to check out the trail to Wasilla Creek, also known as Cottonwood Slough, popular rabbit hunting area. This is right off the Glenn highway...

And looking north towards the Talkeetna mountains.

At the creekside. Ice not thick enough to walk on, so we don't need to gert the bike much closer than that!

A downstream view.

On the trail back to the main road. Matanuska peak in the background.

Made a stop by the llama farm on the way home.

I have some more pictures, but fotothing only lets a free acount upload 10 per day. I'm hoping for some sunset pictures later, if the timing works out...[/img]

Absolutely stunning pics! Thanks Gnomad.

One question for us okes not used to snow. How do ride in that stuff?  I mean, what skills is needed to ride that type of conditions? I see you've got some serious knobblies on there.

 Stunning pics and you have just given me a new appreciation for snow  8)

Incredible, I never even thought that it would be a good idea to ride a bike in that weather. Now it makes sense and beats sitting cooped up in an artificially heated house.

Where is this anyway?

Near my home in Wasilla, Alaska, about 60 Kms north of Anchorage. If you look at a map of Alaska, follow Cook Inlet (IIRC, NZ also has a Cook Inlet  8)  ) and the north end is where most of these shots were taken. The frost is from the fog that rolls in off the water, slicks up the bridge across the Knik river most fearsomly.

The tires are Kenda Trackmasters equipped with 11mm car studs, little carbide spikes in an aluminum jacket, I studded them myself as the local tire shops won't handle this job for reasons of liability, this is after all the US where lawyers rule everything.  I found that they work much better than I had expected, I've never had an off during the winter, even while riding across ice roads on the local lakes.

As for the snow vs sand-sand is softer to fall on. I've had occasion to test the snow on many different sports, snowmobiles, skiis, sleds, falling on my a$$, and sand gives a lot more-but it sure is a lot of work to ride in! Once in a while I get a wild hair and find some sand and after 15 minutes I've had enough, can't imagine the PD guys traveling through sand for days!

Riding in snow is a weird feeling. To me it feels a bit like mud, but it makes crunching sounds!

The real snow will soon be here with us in the mountains... but there is no way I am putting studs on my bikes tires. Wonder if the scoropions will be OK in the farmers field in the snow?  Looking forward to trying it!
