The Katana was the 1st Jap bike to be designed by a proper European design house (and it shows).

The original Target Design / Jan Fellstrom Katana study was way ahead of its time and revolutionary. The concept of integrating the rider into the bike rather than putting him on top was picked up very quicly by the competition (VF750F, GSXR750, ZXR750) and every modern superbike still looks back onto the Katana as their design ancestor.

I had a 750. Nice bike although quite a handful at low speeds and to manhandle.

Hans Muth

You are right that Hans Muth later laid claim to the Katana Design and also has done some work on it but the original sketches were all signed (and obviously made by) his Target colleague Jan Fellstrom.
A rather little known fact.

Bought a GS 550 after my KLR600 was stolen in 85. Worst bike I ever had. Put me off Suz for life. Leaked oil like I had shares in OPEC.

I stand corrected but I think the 1100 Katana has been in production in Japan until not so long ago, if not still.
A few years ago I read an article that they are going to put it production agaion, exactly as per the 1980odd spec.

Who knows more about this?
