Is it really adventure riding when you have a back-up bakkie?

I have an opinion on what constitutes adventure riding. Some guys (like Charley and Ewan) pack everything AND the kitchen sink and are followed by a back-up vehicle.

Sometimes guys go across the border with a back-up vehicle carrying extra fuel and their camping equipment. Personally I feel that is akin to playing at your local enduro track, stopping for a beer now and then.

Make no mistake, I too have enjoyed a few trips with back-up vehicles. But then we tend to ride faster and do dumber things.

Personally I think 'Adventure Riding' is defined as being self-sufficient on your bike i.t.o. fuel and emergency spares. Basic camping gear could be included, but as those who have travelled further than their local caravan park have found out, accomodation is to be found everywhere and many seasoned Cape-to-Cairo travellers have slept in a room provided by locals. In fact, this is more in keeping with the spirit of adventure than running away from the locals and camping far away in your expensive tent, eating freeze-dried food/2 Minute Noodles and only mixing with your group's people. A part of the adventure is socialising with the locals. But enough of what I think.

What do you think? Is a trip with a back-up vehicle full of booze and vacuum packed steaks, towing a trailer with big chopper tents while you ride your light semi-enduro bike adventure riding? Or shouldn't it be called 'Remote Dirt Biking'?

Is there really such a thing like adventure riding?

Let me quickly zip up my flame-proof suit... ah, there we go.
