Europe Tour, 21 days and 7100km.
« on: July 22, 2009, 03:19:02 pm »
Hi everyone, recently my missus and i just got back from 3 weeks touring which included England, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland and coverd some 7100km !
I'll try keep the writing short and add more pictures.
PART 1

Day 1:  Scully and i met my brother and his friend in Putney and collected our rental bikes, 2 BMW 650's and we were on a Honda Deauville 700cc, we had 2 days to get used to the bikes and first stop was Stonehenge.
After about 3 hours riding we stopped at a roadsice diner for lunch.

Another 2 hours of riding and we rolled into Dover at 7pm, it was still light but getting chilly, the Garmin Zummo was doing a great job. The white cliffs are a lovely sight. We rode about another 20km along tiny little farm roads to our B+B for 2 nights.

Ale Farm
Up early i went for a walk around the farm

A short ride to the beach, no sand here !

We spent the rest of the day riding along the coast, some short showers, getting lost and riding along bicycle paths.

We also visited Windsor Castle which was nice, huge moat around it, cannons, dungeons and so many rooms.

A quick visit to some local pubs and we were home by 10pm, still light by the way, 2 days and 754km. Deauville handles great, got up to 140km with Scully on the back and fully loaded, looking forward to France !

PART 2

We met our tour group which we would follow for a week and then head our own way.

French speed limit was 130km/h so we cruised along at 145/150km/h for about 500km to our first hotel, this was the boring part, we decided to blast along the highways of northern France and use 2 days to cover 1000km to our base so we had more time to explore the southern areas. We stopped for fuel about every 200km. Odd thing was the 3 heaviest loaded bikes ( all riden by south african's) we travelling in front while the 15 sports bikes lagged behind a bit, we were quite comfortable  ;D

Scully having a quick bite to eat, there was no sitting down during these fuel stops. Not too many complaints from her.

Our hotel for the night, this must be a village were the old come to die, there is nothing here, just 2 cafes. We really looked forward to our breakfast and were dumbfounded to find it was 1 croissant, no toast, no eggs, no bacon, nada !

A brief meeting to tell us not to drive fast and give eachother more room !? Not sure whom that was directed at  ???

Quick walk around town before we headed out.
No other pics that day, just boring highways for another 500km, we reached our little town around 5pm and discovered everything basically shuts on a sunday, we had a quick shower and walked to town for a quick dinner, which was Pizza again, pizza was great, waitress looked like a victim of plastic surgery gone wrong.
1000km in 2 days  :thumleft: the Deauville really feels good once you get above 130km, loaded with a passenger it was stable and had lots more to offer, just a 5 speed though, got up to 168km on a nice straight road, roads here are like a cricket pitch, excellant condition, oh and no Taxis !!

Part 3:

When we arrived at Bourg St Maurice we settled in and took a walk into the small town which was pretty quiet as everything was closed, we found a pizza place and enjoyed a really nice pizza, pitty waitress looked like a victim of plastic surgery gone wrong  :(
Next morning i was up early as usual and took a short ride.

The area here is really beautiful, nice and quiet too since it was summer.

After a quick breakfast, if you can call it that, we all met up for a ride.

This is at the campsite where my brother and friend slept in a chalet.

While there was another briefing, we were getting some odd looks by now, we snuck away to find some real food.
High up a mountain pass we came to Arc 2000

It was rather cold up here !

More coming soon!

Part 4 :

As we continued exploring the area we came to a dead end and had to make a U-Turn, never have i seen a group of bikers looked so SCARED !

As we continued i decided to have a go on the BMW as i will be looking at a dual purpose bike soon.

It is a really nice bike but there is a bit too much power and torque readily avaliable in all the gears for me, i found myself passing crotch rockets in the straight and jumping on the lovely brakes a bit too late for the corners . i decided to swop back again as this much fun was getting frowned apon  :ricky:

After about 5 hours riding around and a quick downpour we met up again to show these Pommies how to braai
Next morning was my birthday and we had an early start, we split into 2 groups today and i went solo today.

Making our way towards Lake Tignes

This bike did lack packing space for 2 people so we ditched the bulky warm clothes, at this point i was regretting it !

It was surprisingly warm in the sun once we stopped riding.

Down into the valley again it soon got warmer and we found a nice village to have lunch in.

The water isn't clear here, got this nice colour to it.

I did see this nice machine which i'm eager to try !

Back at the hotel i celebrated my birthday with Scully, Rabbit and Sardines, best meal i had in France !

Part 5

Today being our last day in France the 4 of us decided to try ride to Mont Blanc, it is at about 4500m, so i punched it into the Garmin and off we went.

It didn't take long to reach the Italian border, we were going to cut through a corner of Italy and back into France.

Lovely roads this side !

We are trying to go up there somewhere, little did we know there were no roads up there so
the Garmin got us to the nearest road and then just drew a straight line to the summit  :xxbah:

We went through this 11km tunnel at a cost of 27 Euro, halfway through the Garmin told us to take a left turn  ???
We soon realised there were no roads and from here we would need to take a cable car, after wasting 27 Euro we skipped it and went looking for lunch.

Grant said he felt something cooking so needed a rest  :pot:

We found a well stocked bar for lunch, the lasagne i ordered came in a box like you buy in Spar  :(

Some lovely flowers here.

Lots of signs here.

No shortage of water here

Going back to France

Scully was looking for some Old Brown Sherry.
That was it for the day, we relaxed at the campsite and went out for Pizza again, off to Germany tomorrow bright and early.
171km for the day  :ricky:

PART 6

We were up at 4:30am and on the road at 5:15am, it was still a little dark and cold, looked like a lovely morning. First tunnel i went through i was doing 80km in a 70km zone and all i remember was a bright flash from behind us. We had been warned about these cameras  >:(
Second tunnel i went through at 60km in an 80km zone, another bloody flash, not looking good since we still have another 20-30 tunnels to go through on this trip.

Looks like a good day ahead.

By 8am we had crossed into Switzerland and made our first stop for a very nice cup of coffee.

We started to see some nice cars here.

Strict fuel efficiency here !!

The weather was great now, just warm.

Suddenly around the next corner the weather up ahead looked worrying.

It wasn't long and it was raining, but 10 minutes later it stopped, bootss were nice and wet now.

As we turned off the highways we headed into wine area, this was were we would be staying.

High on one hill we noticed this old castle.

It was clearly seen from our small town.

The town was very neat and full of restaurants to choose from
After dinner we headed home for a good bath and try get some washing done,
It was then at 7pm that Scully decided she wanted eye drops  ???  Well i was out the door quick enough and must have gone to 6 different shops, really now did she honestly think any shops would still be open ?? No luck so back to the hotel it was.

A very nice 524km for the day !! Off to Italy in the morning.
Now covered 2936KM  :ricky:

PART 7

Today's ride would take us to northern Italy where we would spend 2 nights.

The scenery was looking good as we got closer to our town. So far we had stopped about 5 times, it was 33 degrees and there are alot of roadworks going on, at 1 point we rode for 10km in the emergency lane, 1 tunnel took us 30 minutes and we got extremely hot inside it. There were few fellow bikers spotted down here.

We began to see some familiar things.

They do love their buildings down here.

10 hours of riding and 3 hours for fuel stops and lunch and we finally reached our hotel. 730km for the day !  :ricky:

Next morning i was up early to scout the area for some nice roads.

Will need to go check this lake out later.

Good bike parking is a must for me.

We did tour 1 + 2 .

High up on the hill was another castle dating way way back.

Spotted these 2 well kitted out bikes, Scully was keen on getting a seat cover !

These halls are huge, pitty about the renovations, buildings look moddern now.

We wandered down to the lake for a drink, had cooled down nicely now by 6pm, so nice and clean here.

Not too crowded and no people hassling you.

A bar on the beach was cool, there wern't many old fogies here  ;D

We decided to explore the otherside of the lake, great when it is still light at 8pm.

My trusty garmin led me down this lovely narrow windy road towards the lake, however not long along it turned to a rutted gravel road. Now i was beginning to feel nervous as i had earlier dropped the bike going over a firemans hose, luckily the crash gaurds worked well. I signalled Scully to get off and i made a delicate 10 point turn  :thumleft:
We stuck to the main road after this and explored some of the farming area before heading back to our town to eat some Pizza for a change, we then went back to the hotel to watch the evening storm again, we sat on our balcony sipping Bailey's on ice.
Tomorrow we ride to Rome  :ricky:

PART 8

Today we would head south to Rome, leaving early in the morning to try avoid the heat. The going was good today, not that much traffic, a few stops for petrol and lunch, however somehow i missed a toll, might have something to do with the U-Turn i made so at the next toll booth i had to pay R500  ???  A little later another toll R300  :bueller: We couldn't find our B+B as the lady had given us the wrong gps co-ordinates and her lack of english didn't help so we checked into this slightly dodgy hotel, still at a cost of R850 ! Getting tired of trying to squeeze everything into the bike everyday we decided to post some of our things home, mainly our rain gear.

The building on the right is the post office. We bought a box here.

We continued straight on this ROAD however it became narrower and narrower so i decided to do a U-Turn and try stay on the wider road.

We would be having dinner below the castle tonight.

We thought it was strange having meat on display like this in the supermarket.

Next morning we headed into the city to have a walk around and see the Collesseum.

There wasn't alot of parking, have a look at the car on the right !

I wanted to make sure our trusty Ride was going to be here when we returned, bike theft is big in England and Italy !

Amazing how much detail was put into these buildings.

Big isn't it !

Scully trying to give it some scale.

Scully and i posing.

You can see how the floor used to be and the gladiators and animals were kept below in the cells.

I think the french copied them ?

Lovely blue skies, but it seems to rain alot late afternoons here.

Scully hinting it was Siesta time !

More coming after lunch.

After some lunch we headed to Tuscany and found ourselves a very nice hotel.

It felt so nice to be in an airconditioned room again !

The water was great !

I was told there was a box i could park my bike in  ;D
After a short walk to the town, we relaxed in the room for a while and then went to have dinner in the hotel restaurant, very nice meal, mixed grill and lamb steak with mushroom sauce.
