I encourage any WDs who head to USA to beg/borrow/rent a bike and do some of these dirt roads. They're fantastic.

I plan to do that!

What does renting a bike for a month set you back? Roughly?

It's actually quite expensive to rent. It'd cost ~$500 for 3 days. If you're gonna be using one for a month, I think it'd be much cheaper to buy a bike and then sell it again. You'd need a week at the end of your trip to sell it again. Post it on Craigslist and wait for a bite. They sell fast. The older KLRs are selling for anything from $1500 to $2500 depending on age, condition and mileage.

Makes sense... buying and selling there... what about shipping you own bike over?

1500 is about R10k...  so if you can ship your bike visa versa for less than that... its a deal... i doubt it though...

I didn't inquire about shipping my own bike over. I'd be more worried about all the legalities. California, for example, have a bunch of environmental requirements. The KLRs over there have funny plastic boxes and extra fuel lines and things that my KLRs here don't have. Not to mention insurance issues.

But if you buy a bike for $2000, you'll be able to sell it again for $2000, with the only costs being $100 for annual insurance and $100 for change of ownership.  :ricky:
