I'm in the planning stage of my trip from Barrydale to JHB in September. I plan to overnight in Baviaanskloof, Hogsback, Matatiele/Mount Fletcher area and somewhere along Sani Pass to Caledonspoort (Oxbow lodge?) Any recommendations for camping or B&B's in these areas would be highly appreciated

Hi Frog,

Have a look at The Great Trek, and see if the dates correspond with what you have in mind. I'd like some company through the Baviaans if at all possible, and if the rest of the dates fit in with your plans, why don't we do a large part of the trip together?

A bunch of us went up Sani and stayed in Oxbow in Feb this year - great accomdation at reasonable price - I think it was about R450 including dinner.

No cell phone reception and the satelite phone is R90 per minute.

Hi TrailBlazer, I checked your link. It seems we are just going to miss each other as I will only be leaving Barrydale on the 28 September and sleeping over in Baviaanskloof that night. Unfortunately I can not change this date. If you can change your dates you are welcome to join as I will be doing the trip solo at this stage.

The Backpackers in Hogsback is not too bad. As you enter Hogsback from the West there's a new Caravan Camp as well - just a bit bare, their trees still need to grow!

Hi Frog

Unfortunately I am also unable to chne dates. Trailrider has kindly organised a ride into The Hel, and Attakwaskloof, over the weekend of 11-13 sep. from there I'll be working back via PE and EL to JNB.

Pity that we'll miss each other; maybe some day we'll meet up on the road. Enjoy and safe riding   :thumleft:

I'll be camping. I read elsewhere on the forum that Bruitjieskraal campsite or Rooihoek campsite are good?

Bruintjieskraal was the venue of the 2008 EC WD Bash  - Lots of info at http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=17687.0

Rooihoek is really great with it's own beach and clear waters.

hi frog!

i would definitely recommend away with the fairies backpackers. stayed there over christmas and new year's and there were quite a few adventure riders passing through. gorgeous views, safe, close to town (the little that there is), friendly staff, inexpensive accommodation ranging from camping to chalets and cheap booze! word of warning though.... bar can get quite rowdy at times if there's a lot of people and the music tends to stay on all night when that happens, so set up camp far away from the bar!

normally you can book through conservation ( number on Bivaans web site) but if you comming through Willowmore side during the week you could take a chance and pitch a tent under the trees and plead not guilty IF anybody finds you >:D.Enjoy the beach ,wear dark glasses and dive the crystal clear ponds. :thumleft:
