Cave Girl and myself were going to sleep over in Putsonderwater last year, but had to skip it due to bike problems. We did go there, however, and soon found that although the town really is a ghost town, it is also the crossing point of two major roads in the area, so it is by no means quiet. There is traffic passing through it almost constantly.

I live less than 100m from the N1 highway and I don't hear it at all.
Stop 500m from the N1 in the Free State and you'll hear every vehicle that passes.
I once slept over on a farm near Kokstad.  We were at least 500m from the road.
I couldn't sleep all night because of the passing traffic noise.

msoli mine near Baberton. old asbestos mine, the whole town is in perfect condition...just empty. even the clubhouse swimmingpool, and the ferris wheel...all still there....apparently there is a land claim...so till then the town is a real ghost town...

Up to now most ghost towns are near Johannesburg as far as I've checked. Are there any ghost town near the Garden route? Would be nice to drive by/ to one for an hour or two, when I'm doing the Garden Route with some friends. My apologies if there were any mentioned, but I missed it...

This is an awesome thread! Never even thought about ghost towns existing.
I am in White River, so Diepgezet is close by, think I might go and check it out this weekend.
Will report back after the weekend

Yesterday was a fail, didn't quite realise that the last stretch of the road was slippery mud. After a few km's, and a couple of near falls, i decided to turn around and avoid having to explain to the insurance how my bike ended up at the bottom of the mountain. Need to sharpen my off road abilities and skill first before heading to Diepgezet again, or maybe just go on a sunny day.

Must say though, the road between Barberton and the border is amazingly beautiful. Slow winding roads in the mountains and plantations. It was also great to see the old cable cart system between Swaziland and Barberton, must have been something to see when it was operational. The mist also made for a wonderfully relaxing trip, makes you feel as though you are the only person left on the planet.

Will be heading back that way on a dryer day

Awesome pic. I'm staying over in Diepgezet at the end of the month. I phoned Kromdraai just down the road and they said they don't do camping any more due to the elephants, the guy put me in touch with someone who said we can camp right near Diepgezet along the river, apparently right by the water fall. If that fails I'm sure one could camp sommer somewhere out of site. Thanks for the up-date on the road, we'll have to sharpen our off-road skills before we get there.
