Yip lane splitting is and can be dangerous

Have to be in "Town" at least twice a week, what freaks me out are the Vuka's filtering at full tilt (80km/h) while traffic is not moving, daai ou sal sy gat so hard sien, hy sal of dood of in 6-maande traksie wees   Can't wait for summer, xr's lights suck, not cool on N-1 from Worcester in pitch black.

I watch the cars' front wheels - you see them turn before the car as a whole.

Extreme sport for sure! …and we have a winner in EL. There’s this oke on a Deputy or sorts that works the same shift as me.  Never have, and never will beat this guy to work or home. He’s farking nuts! Filters at full tilt!

On the way to work , 06h45 [ its bucketing down ] the intersection as you come over Wynberg Hill down into Bishops[M3}, the light s are green for me, traffic is across the intersection, I am crawling along very slowly.[10km+] A school girl in dark blue uniform steps out from in front of a car. I did not see her!

Impact! Scream[her]  violent shake of the handle bars. I don’t drop the bike J . Park and assist her to some cover. [Big noise she makes] . No cars stop that saw it. .Security guard from the consulate assist and we contact her mom, 10111, etc. I charm her down.

Mom arrives and request that she not be moved. Manages to wave down a Traffic Cop and he gets things in motion. 1h10 later we have the Fire Response team, two ambulances, +20 tow trucks. [ I would have put her in a car and got her to hospital , but yer not me ]

Bike damage – my head light was pushed off it clips and my left indicator was rip of but still work able.[fixed]

Pedestrian – Saw right leg, saw right shoulder.

Me – arm a touch stiff from the whip lash of the handle bars and an hour late to work…..

i once hada close call coming into an intersection and turning right into the double lane...an indigenous chap was walking half way across intersection and i was passin around the outside of him...he saw me and hit a panic and ran back across the friggin rd...i just clipped him it was a close call.....animals and pedestrians....totally unpredictable

Jeez, Gulp, that's bad luck . Must have shaken you up for a day or two.

Don't know if it would have helped in your case, but I always slow down when passing a 'high' vehicle, i.e. where you can't see what's on the other side. Pedestrians seem to pop out from behind buses, taxis, lorries and 4x4s at the drop of a helmet.

Also, when passing a high vehicle that has come to a stop, and there's a gap in front of it, it may indicate that it has stopped to let another car in from a side-street: don't go charging blindly into the gap, only to T-bone an old tannie in a Fiesta

re the original opening statemants, as a regular commuter in 40kay heavy traffic, i often notice good and bad days.

this morning was a bad one, had 7 (yes 7) near misses.

some days it's a doodle. Not sure if it is them or me!!!

bottom line, every day is an adventure!!!!

Growweblaar that N2 out of CT is a bliksem, rather you than me as, other than the N1, you also have the taxis to contend with.

One can learn to live with the traffic on the N1 but if you don't keep your hand in with regular trips, you have to start all over again before you get smooth again. When taxis get thrown into the mix...it really becomes an xtreme sport.

I "met" this fellow the other day that was walking in between the lanes towards town (CPT CBD) on the outbound N2 just before the Woodstock turnoff in rush hour.

I told him to get the @#$% off the highway which was met by an ignore and he kept on his merry way. WTF?!

So now we have to look out for pedestrians lane splitting too?!

Lane splitting on the N1 (inbound until M5) is tame compared to the N2. Anticipate is the name of the game. I actually prefer the N1 to the back roads, cause on the back roads if you try to stick to the speed limit you'll be run over by the cars.

And I normally get passed by all the scooterboys and gals when splitting. They seem to think they are invincible, they keep their 80km/h max when splitting, crazy!
