Yes, lots has happened since then hey?

I think that was the best bash I've been to, but because most the roads there, around and back where new, and we did a lot of riding.
And kuiered lekker as well.

whilst coming back from Ongeluksnek Nature Reserve today (for work), I passed a lone KTM rider (looked like a 1190) heading towards the pass... Hope he knows what to expect, weather also now turning quite poor...
life is too short to be lukewarm!

This brings back fond memories of a day somewhere around May 2002 or thereabouts when Ongeluksnek did it's name proud justice. It somehow worked out to be an unwanted Ad for Pratley's steel epoxy there next to the lake. There was fokol oil left in the motor, lost most of it when a rock came launching itself out of nowhere at my sump. Long story short, we made it back OK and I still have the R80 - Now with a sump guard!

Edit: in 2002 there was no one at the border post - seems things haven't changed much.
Got me thinking - planning a ride up there and back sometime in the good season, May 2015 onwards. Maybe take the same bike or maybe the XR?.....

We didn't post last week, as we were away filming, but as this pass is definitely an adventure biker's kind of pass, we thought we should post it here belatedly.

Uncover the rich history of how the pass got its name as we take you through the intricacies of this big climb up over the border into Lesotho. In one of the videos we show a comparison of climbing ability between a Pajero, Patrol & Cruiser.

This is definitely one for the bucket list. You need to be prepared for thunderstorms, mud, hail, rain, snow or sunshine and depending on what the weather holds in store, you could have a very tough time doing this pass. best not to travel this one alone. It's not called Ongeluksnek for nothing!

The route is rated Code Red when it's wet.

We wish all members of Wild Dogs a Merry Christmas and safe riding over the festive season.

We went up in October, was mostly dry with some muddy patches. Awesome pass, challenging though. We were on XT660z, GS1200, KTM1190 and a Tiger 800xc.

I was also part of the group that went up Ongeluksnek with Flip, also on a GS. once my Heidi had some mud on it...All I can say is that my overall fitness level left me wanting. It was beautiful though.

Nice photos! They especially show how rough the track is - and that is in good weather. Wait until it's muddy or there is sloshy snow around. Lots of falls - and I don't mean waterfalls!!

Thanks, I am planning on going there early in the new year, so very helpful info.
Question for you guys that have done it, Matat, Ongeluksnek into Lesotho, Qacha's Nek back to Matat in one day? Possible?
It seems as if there is a shortcut on the Lesotho side, but I am not so sure that it is usable?
Any advice?

Yes do-able

IMHO at the T junction at the top of Ongeluksnek if you take a left you will cut down into a valley (steep) that in my opinion is one of the prettiest I have ridden it comes out before Mount Moroosi (runs next to the river that if flowing is stunning, same one you cross at the low wall before it drops into the valley) . Bit of a longer loop but then turn right and its tar all the way to the border also scenic. Just a suggestion!
Ride it like you stole it!

Don`t underestime this pass.
Came down in dry weather 2 years ago with loaded Dakars and I went over the edge and destroyed my knee. a small slipup caused it but its a testing ride.
Once at the to from lake Latse onwards is stunning and straight-forward whichever way you go.

It is all tar to Qacha and then about 30km gravel to Matat.
From Ongeluks to Qacha there are 2x options, a short route direct via Empaki and a longer stunning route via Mount Moroosi.

There is a an RR here somewhere from not to long ago and it looked as if some repairs had been done since I went up there beginning of last year.
Not sure after the last rains though.
If you are in a group and take it slow, you should be ok.
Worth the effort.

I went up recently, in September.  I did a RR and video of each of our 4 days in Lesotho.
