DR650 Info: Ping Groenie, lecap, etc :)
« on: October 13, 2009, 12:34:31 pm »
I am trying to get a rack built for my bike; I asked an engineer friend for some help, thinking it'd be the easiest way to go about it. Turns out that's not the case - he's worried about using a regular school ruler for the measurements and we don't have any other tools, except a hammer and I've already tried that!!! I'm looking for some measurements on/around the rack and grab handles on a DR650...

I'm looking for:
1) dist between bolts (horizantal & vertical)
2) dist between max height of seat/rear plastic above lowest bolt
3) dist from forward bolt to the back of the seat (actual foam part of the seat)
4) dist from aft bolt to indicator light (dist that the bolt is set forward
along the frame in relation to the front of light)
5) dist between bolts from top view

Will post the finished results in pooratech  :thumleft:

Your bike still has the sticking-up tail light with the "come-on-and-break-me attitude" which can seriously get in the way.

I build the stuff on the bike. Cut and fit and fit and cut until it looks right. Then tack weld while still on the bike, remove and finish it. So no measurements.....
Don't look back, that's not where you're going.

You can borrow my rack if you think it might help.

There's no danger of farking up the electics as long as you disconnect the battery I take it?

You don't  have to disconnect anything, just make sure to have proper ground contact and put it as close as possible to the part you actually weld.

I would only be careful if welding aluminium with HF overlay machines. Better done off the bike all together.

Ok, That should be easy enough. The highest risk is me making holes in the plastics with my birdshit welding!  :D

I'd rather not take a chance and always disconnect the battery. A little effort to prevent what could be a very expensive fark up. Years back I nearly torched my Combi with a short caused by welding.
Don't look back, that's not where you're going.

That's why you use a wet towel or 2 to cover the bike.
