July - Bravo Company.

Me too!!!!! With the PE guys in the bungalow. Not the opmans though the old Bravo bungalows!!!! Had Iverson and the likes in my platoon

hell its too long ago now to remember the guys names. i think we were last but one from the end?  yep those crappy old ones!  i remember there were PE guys in the bungalow but more English/Durban guys. i think the PE guys were further along near the front?  Our corporal was killed in a car crash at one point during basic training.  Near the end of basic training i caused a bit of a problem as i refused a punishment drill one night (a sick and tired of taking crap for others) and the sergeant (massive permanent force guy) gave me a bit of a slap about.  I think they were worried what I might say so they offered me anything I wanted.  Seeing as I was nearly though the worst I decided to stay in the army but moved to HQ Company after basic training.  Got into some crap in the township one night, which followed us back to the main gate and kicked off again.  Got declared a fair fight and got shipped out with alpha company for six months then again for three months.

Holy crap. I was in HQ after jumping off the back of a moving Bedford during Steedlike tuin ops. Fucked my knee up. Did the " Bantu Admin" for a while then sent to Queenstown to be an interpreter on signals etc.

Small world, I remember the "clap" thing though!!

Man , this was a great read!!!!!!!!

I remember the SADF having a motocross team in the early 80's.... They always used an army tent in the pits!!!!!

If I recall correctly, David van der Merwe was one of the guys that raced for the team while doing national service.
And Peter Hills as well.....

Also had a good friend (Guy Ladeira) who raced with me that served in the demonstration bike squad in '82 and '83.... Needless to say he was the clown!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Peter Hill became a factory works rider after the army, was pretty good as well. He is a member of our Harley club in cape town. Still rides offroad and DS. Great guy. :thumleft:

Fantastic! Just read this for the first time. Some great pics and anecdotes. I was with Bike Squad platoon 6 and 7 July 79 to June 81. Partick Devy and I were up on the border at the same time. I did hear from who I now gather is Patrick's boet a few years ago about doing a book. Where can I buy 1? I am still in contact with a number of the guys. I still ride , a red XR 650 not a brown XR500!

Just finished reading this thread and must say there are many names I recall,

I was Demo Team in 87 and 88.

The guys crushed by the Samil was Nick Stubbs in happened in 86 and I think it was at Eshowe not Durban.

His cousin was with me in 87 and 88.

I have posted a few pics in the military section as welll as the Swap was our Traction thread.

Will scrounge out one or two more and post them here.

We did the Durban Tatoo in 87 with Patrick Devy as our Lt. We had to meet him at Magoos every day at two so that he could make sure where sober and capable of riding  >:D

Hello Cuzzy,

That "boet' would be me, Pat's brother-from-another-mother

Still sitting on the manuscript, set up a publishing company LLC recently so if I can get off my KTM.....

I do have a XR 650 though, (and four 500's, including a bigwheel) it's in Joburg......getting that shipped to my current domicile soon

Please get in touch, I'd love to chat.

Cheers

Yuri

MAYBE, Yuri is enjoying himself so much in “Trump Land”  that he has forgotten about the book.
