American Kyle Redmond and New Zealander Rory Mead will add to the international contingent tackling Southern Africa’s toughest hard enduro, the Roof of Africa. The Roof has become synonymous as one of the toughest off road races in the world and after the domination of New Zealander Chris Birch on last years event, has attracted an unprecedented interest by the world’s best off road riders to this years event.
Both Redmond and Mead have competed in other international hard enduro events, like this years Erzberg Rodeo in Austria, where both finished the event with great aplomb. Mead finished in sixth position, two places ahead of last year’s Roof Champ Birch, while Redmond finished the extremely tough event in a very credible tenth position. Mead will tackle Lesotho’s mountains on a Yamaha YZ250 two stroke, whilst Redmond will be mounted on a Yamaha YZ 250 F, with both being assisted by off road racing specialists Shimwells Yamaha Ramco Racing as well as Yamaha Distributors South Africa.
Topriders Chris Birch and Jesús Zavala Garcia, who recently showed his talent at Erzberg, will be among the KTM riders going all out for glory in Lesotho. Let's not forget that the SA contingent of Louwrens Mahoney, Darryl Curtis, Jade Gutzeit, Riaan van Niekerk, Altus de Wet, William Gillitt and others have all upped their game and will be ready to give the international pro's a whole new fight.
Never before has such a competitive field of international competitors shown such an interest in the mother of Southern African hard enduro, and this years event is certainly building up to be one of the most exciting and challenging yet. South African competitors will most definitely have their work cut out for them as they tackle the mountains of Lesotho for race glory against some of the world’s best.
The great news is that the organisers have gone out of their way to make this years route more spectator friendly than ever before. See you in Lesotho!
