Not really a Ride Report, just an idea that might appeal to others.

Last week on day one, I left Fourways with the general intention of riding for a few days in the mountains of Lesotho, and tear along some out of the way gravel roads.

After Heildeburg I got onto the railway service road via Balfour and Greylingstad.  At Holmdene I turned south and crossed the Vaal at Roberts Drift, then followed my nose and road signs to Vrede.  From Vrede to Verkykerskop.  Genreally heading s.s.w to the mountains.  From Verkykerskop to Harrismith.

At Harrismith you can see the Drakensberg, so no need for maps or GPS.  However my route took me through Bergville, Loskop, Kamberg and Lower Loteni.  I camped on a bald hill near Dreycott Station.  Beautiful night, so did not put the tent up and slept well.

Day two to Himeville for fuel, change to 13t sprocket and through Sani Pass and on to Mokhotlong, going as fast as I safely could.  I did about 100km around Mokhotlong and camped on a mountain about 10 km from town.  Also a beautiful night, but the gailforce winds at 2 600 metres made it impossible to put up my tent alone. So a very cold night on the ground.  Dawn at around 04h00 and I am surrounded by manure gratherers.  Small incident with their stick weilding escort.

Day three did about 250km around Mokhotlong and Thaba- Tseke, the old roof route.  back down Sani Pass, replaced 15t sprocket, and headed back in general direction of Harrismith.  I sneaked onto a farm near Verkykerskop, and again slept on the ground.  Very comfortable.

Day four, I was woken at 04h00 by galloping horses, who stopped about 10m from me to stop and stare.  Their antics were amaxing, they would gallop around me, red indian styl for a bit and then stop and stare again.  This was repeated several times, until I suspected the farmer may notice and come to investigate.  At that time the horses lost interest and wandered away grazing.  I took the opportunity to pack up and carry-on.  Still only about 05h30, cold and misty.  I followed my same route back to Holmdede and Heidleburg, and was back in Fourways well before noon.

Cost : 5 fill-ups at say R.100, 00 each, two pies and a Nandos, less than R.600, 00.  Total distance : +/- 1 950 km.

I am content for a while now.  Cheers.
