If you need to Camp next to Voortrekker Rd in Bellville, there is always Hardekraaltjie Caravan park.

I have done it in the cederberg.

Yip, Norhtern Cederberg still seem safe...for now, of course...

Actually, you CAN camp anywhere you like, just keep a shotgun and shovel with you... :Whaxatk:
If at first you don't succeed, take another swig of whiskey and try again...

It might be safer camping in the forest / karoo than in one's back yard. I think generally the further you are from civilization the better.

I think civilisation is the wrong word to use in this case.

Most farmers will not have an issue if you just go past the house and ask. To get away from the farmhouse again will be your problem. Karoo farmers love the company ;)
right next to the road - i dont think anywhere in the world that is a good idea any more

but if your in the karoo 150km from the nearest settlement and you pull off the road and into the veld it should be okay

only thing is being in the veld you are on a farmers land and some of them might not be to keen

finding a farm house on a 70 000+ ha farm is not always that easy  ;D

if you can see your camping spot from the road then dont camp there is what i say

if its dark then you dont need to camp to far from the road to find a secluded spot

but it only gets dark at about 20:45 and its light at like 4:30 so your night will be short  :biggrin:

Not easily done in the good old RSA, anymore. Tooooo built up. But is still possible in a lot of area's, just not anywhere near a main road. This is kind of the same anywhere in Southern Africa.
I always recon a camping spot move off a few klms have dinner and go back in the dark, quietly as possible.
Camp out regularily and have never had a problem. The bigger the group the harder it is though :ricky:

I wouldnt feel safe camping in my backyard!!

My son wanted to camp in our garden and this very thought crossed my mind.  :(

I camped with my daughter in my yard and didn't feel as safe as in my house. Shocking
I did have a Glock 17 and a few torches along with 2x yapper dogs.

I do not think anywhere is safe

As a rule, if we HAVE TO do it - We wait until dusk when our intentions are not obvious, try to keep as quiet as possible and not advertise our presence - eg making a fire

Good procedure as per setting up a temporary base when on a military patrol in hostile territory.  :biggrin:

That was my first thought when I read this.  Setting up a f**ken TB in SA! Pathetic, innit?!

You COULD do like we used to sometimes - ride till after dark, shut down in a bushy area, then push your bike for 200 or 300 metres - QUIETLY  :laughing4:

I'm starting a new business - for a few beers I'll dust off  the old memory banks and train you to set up a TB. I KNEW that skill would come in handy some day :imaposer:

+1000  :biggrin:

I considered telling the okes about moving in a "dogleg", ie, proceeding for some disctance after dark, doing a 90deg and another 90deg in the same direction and then quitely laying an ambush, complete with Claymores, a "doodsakker" and a LMG stopper group, but then I thought nah, I will go over people's heads.

I was wrong.  :biggrin:

Old, grey, crafty...

You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars. Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eyes, the swing in your gait, the grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of will and energy to execute your ideas. Enthusiasts are fighters. They have fortitude. They have staying qualities. Enthusiasm is at the bottom of all progress. With it, there is accomplishment. Without it, there are only alibis.

its actually blikselms sad that one cannot enjoy the outdoors anymore.  Travelling with your wife or girlfriend complicates things even further.  These days i google a place before i go there to see if there has been any crime reports etc - even staying at chalets.  Camping next to the road in SA is just a big no-no for me - i am just not willing to take the risk.

In Nam I usualy find a nice river bed ,go up  out of site  then set up camp ,go cover tracks where you came in ,relax and listen to nature ,they will let you know if something is out there. :thumleft:
ROUTE DIFFICULTY
1 = tar
2 = good gravel /pillian friendly
3 = interspersed with sand, mud, sand , bush / not pillian friendly
4 = lots of sand, technical riding 5 = expert only
