In Nam I usualy find a nice river bed ,go up  out of site  then set up camp ,go cover tracks where you came in ,relax and listen to nature ,they will let you know if something is out there. :thumleft:

So I gather you lie awake the whole night then?

And how do you cover your tracks when you went to cover your tracks? Are you good at anti-tracking techniques? Mine is a bit rusty, I must say.

Some really funny comments here, but it is actually a very sad state of affairs. During my, almost 2 years in Angola, we've camped in the bush a couple of times already, and I must say, I felt quite safe. The only thing that really bugs me is the landmine situation. That is a hell of a gamble you take when you venture into the bush and off the road most travelled.

I've often thought about a kind of early warning device to warn you when someone is about to jump you. Something like a few empty tins with stones in, attached to a line strung between something to keep it about shin high off the ground or, something more modern like a trip line attached to your bike's hooter.

I wouldnt feel safe camping in my backyard!!

My son wanted to camp in our garden and this very thought crossed my mind.  :(

I camped with my daughter in my yard and didn't feel as safe as in my house. Shocking
I did have a Glock 17 and a few torches along with 2x yapper dogs.

Its tragic isnt it? Its only when you realise this fact that it dawns on you how fuked our country is in many ways. Just like I realised a flat wheel on the N2 in Cape Town could cost you your life.
No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery.

Sorry to disagree. N-Cape and the south of Nam is still pretty safe to camp.

Maybe because of the lifestyle in the big cities it became agains our nature to feel safe.

When you set up camp in our valley just put your luggage in your tent before you tuck in.
Theft is common in these areas, but the "locals" wil not easily fark with a unknown biker.

Take my advice; I don't use it anyway.

This has all been carefully contrived to mess with your mind  :o so that we can acquire your expensive camping kit at knockdown (i.e. poepscared) prices.

I have just got a 360║ Lightweight2 tent, so I don't need that item... what else you got?  :thumleft:

Old, grey, crafty...

You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars. Enthusiasm is the sparkle in your eyes, the swing in your gait, the grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of will and energy to execute your ideas. Enthusiasts are fighters. They have fortitude. They have staying qualities. Enthusiasm is at the bottom of all progress. With it, there is accomplishment. Without it, there are only alibis.

there are loads of places you can stealth camp in SA!
I know of several here in the Western Cape. I have never been afraid to camp where I like. Obviously you don't camp in plain view of passers by, that's just stupid.
and you don't start fires on any old piece of land either

I can happily say that I don't suffer from paranoia like some of you freaks ;D

I'm dying to go camping in one of the spots you mentioned in a ride report.
You just setup a trap next to your bike - somewhere in the garden route i think.

In SA there are towns roughly every 50 kays or so apart. Every town will have either a police station or a hotel/ caravan park.  I have often bedded down in a SAPS or even on the lawn of a fuel station.

Places to stay/ camp are plenty. Security on the other hand is a different story.

Are there any places left in the Southern Africa region where you can still camp next to the road without worrying too much? Karoo?

I'll let you know when we return from our 'round trip of SA. We're not booking anything in advance... I'll post GP coordinates on www.aroundsa.blogspot.com if I find nice spots along the way!

ps. we've camped along side the road quite a couple of times without being disturbed.

Just take someone who is more scared than you.
And not a snorer.
They'll stay up and you can sleep after telling them about this thread.

Just thinking of the 3000 farm murders there has been since '94. Seeing as these are the places we escape too...as said before, shotgun for the vermin and a shovel to bury them...oh yes,and make it an illegal gun, that seems to be the norm.
If at first you don't succeed, take another swig of whiskey and try again...

I do not think anywhere is safe

As a rule, if we HAVE TO do it - We wait until dusk when our intentions are not obvious, try to keep as quiet as possible and not advertise our presence - eg making a fire

+1

I like to camp next to the road, but usually I just ask a farmer if I can camp and they have no problem. If there is nothing I pull a couple of hundred metres off the road and out of sight. Obviously there is no chance of that at verneukpan, but then again those places are normally empty. Even in Nam, just move some distance from the main road. No big deal.

Until last yeear i would have agreed.  Then one day, as we wallkked to my bike three guys with knifes jumped me and my wife.  We were lucky we lost only money.  I dont wanna push that luck any further than need be.  Still runs like a bad movie rerun in my head.  If you have your wife with you things are way differnt broe
