Where in SA can you still camp (safely) next to the road?

As a rule, if we HAVE TO do it - We wait until dusk when our intentions are not obvious, try to keep as quiet as possible and not advertise our presence - eg making a fire

I like to camp next to the road, but usually I just ask a farmer if I can camp and they have no problem. If there is nothing I pull a couple of hundred metres off the road and out of sight. Obviously there is no chance of that at verneukpan, but then again those places are normally empty. Even in Nam, just move some distance from the main road. No big deal.

oh and, "Pissies will never be heroes"

I had to at the first farm gate after Verneukpan.  I got a flat wheel just before sunset.  After fitting spare tube moved away from the road so I would not be easily seen.  No one came past that I was aware of.
