KTM 690 Mods and Bling Bling
« on: January 09, 2010, 08:51:09 am »
This thread will (hopefully) be updated with the possibilities and mods that can be done to the KTM690

Please feel free to add your own mods, comments or advice

Here is a provisional wish list:

a. Change the Pipe - DONE
b. FI Power Fast Switch - DONE
c. Corbin seat - DONE
d. Temporary screen - DONE
e. Safari tanks
f. Dakar type fairing and headlight bracket
g. LED spotlights
h. Soft pannier frames
i. Power outlets (Powerlet)

Temporary Screen

I say temporary, because when the Rallye fairing is fitted, it will obviously go
The screen definately adds some dashboard protection and items like a GPS etc are a bit protected. I have mixed feelings about the screen though because I get the feeling the wind is now concentrated at the helmet and not just over the whole body

It is not a genuine KTM part, and there are probably cheaper ones around. Cost is about R 700.00 which I feel is a bit pricey. The fitting template is also useless (DO NOT USE IT). If you use the template you will drill the holes in the wrong place.

It looks quite cool and for nowI'm happy with it  :thumleft:

Exhaust Pipe

The end can just had to go. Initially I thought - no ways - this is an expense I can do without
Again the nanny's to the North are partly to blame. I say partly because I feel KTM could also have done something about it. The stocker is VERY heavy and if it does not fry your leg, your soft luggage or something else - it will definately eventually fry your fuel tank which sits under your seat. There are a few reported cases of this on ADV rider.

Options ? - There are a few available for the 690 but IMO only two gave me that warm feeling between the legs, The Leo Vince and the Akrapovic.
I just like the look of the Akra, so then the Akra it was. Still not convinced ? Take that pipe out of it's box and that warm feeling gets even warmer. The build quality is excellent and the pipe is VERY light, much much lighter than the stocker which now adorns a concrete dumper. That's the only thing the stocker is good for !! So, if you see a dumper in Gauteng with a KTM pipe on - you know where it comes from.  >:D

FI Power Fast switch

Now this little switch is just an extention of what can be done anyway, but only from under the seat which is a PITA.
Many complain that changing the power map is not so noticable, but on the KTM690 the difference is there and lekker to experience.

This item costs $ 92.00 plus postage and RSA VAT and was sourced from KTM Twins.com
It is a bit "plasticky"  :( and could surely have come in black ? - the white looks a bit cheap - which it most certainly is NOT. That fact that is is branded as a Leo Vince product makes the quality issue all the more surprising
Fitting is all of 10 minutes work. The existing switch under the seat plugs out and this one takes it's place.

All said and done - the switch fulfills it's purpose  :thumleft:

Corbin Seat

The OEM seat is good for approx 200km MAX - then your ass is toast.
It had to go and I did some homework. Corbin in the good 'ol US of A specialise in M/cycle seats and this looked the business.
The seat in a fair amount heavier the the OEM one but is fully moulded whereas the original is literally a piece of plastic, a bit of hard foam and a vinyl cover. The Corbin has yet to be tested but is slightly wider, a bit lower and 90% is covered in a nice soft leather. It is a work of art - another good purchase  :thumleft:
The seat was sourced through KTM-parts.com and at $ 341.10 is not that cheap. However, Travelgravel had her OEM seat modded in SA and in the end, cost almost the same. The postage was however a killer at $ 122.29 and then add VAT as well.

Interestingly enough - I think the 690 will be easier on tyres
Also the std tyres that the 690E (not R) comes out with (Sahara's) are pretty good - a real DS tyre
I used to be indecisive, but I'm not so sure anymore

What is a power fast switch?

This is a little switch under the seat whereby the power characteristics can be changed , standard , agressive , low octane fuel and a low power setting where you lose 30% power to bring the power down to the same level as BMW, Yamaha , Suzuki , Kawasaki etc... >:D >:D >:D

See comment by DUX - On the open road the difference is not so noticable. Still playing with it. Will give feedback

1st and 2nd gear restrictor off

Care to explain this one ?

Quote
Airbox out,K&N filters in

Does the entire airbox come out ? - this will free up a lot of space under the seat

I still have to decide - but the one supplied by Rallye Management Services looks like the right one

Ja, this is one I'm toiling over
There's nothing on the net - I've searched all over. The only thing I've picked up are the frames for hard panniers. This is a "soft pannier" bike  8)

I'm thinking of doing similarly to the way AMX does his frames and side racks. The fuel cap is a bit of a bugger though.
An aluminium luggage plate and a simple frame each side for the soft bags
