New to SA - seeking route help from Cape Town
« on: January 16, 2010, 11:07:02 am »
Hi,

My friend and I looking to plan a great weekend route from Cape Town. We are visiting the region for work. I would love to hear any suggestions - but to help make that easier, here is a rough outline of what I would like to ride:

- 1 or 2 nights (either leave CPT Friday night or early Sat; return late Sun or *first* thing Monday)
- Ride mostly tarmac but some off-road as needed / for fun
- Head east along the coast towards Port Elizabeth
- Head home through a mountains routs (or vice versa)

Any advice on must-see/must-ride/must-do/must-eat, or suggestions on routes or places to stay would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Jamie

Hi Jamie, hope you have a great ride!  The "garden route" (N2) is a good scenic ride most of the time.  Goes through, or close to, many smaller towns worth visiting.  You'll basically see most of what's on offer, but it's also nice to stumble on the unexpected, so don't overdo the planning!

There are stunning passes on the inland routes, but some are a bit rough, and most are gravel (but some are excellent gravel).  For a bit more research http://www.getaway.co.za/ is a good place to start.

Have fun!

If you decide to stay in Knysna this is the place on Leisure Island.

Oh an you must take a morning walk around the Island at sunrise!! 4km.

Here is a ride report for the area just for interest!

When you are in PE, send a PM and we can arrange for a few dogs to meet for a beer or 2 :thumleft:
Donít worry about things that arenít, worry about things that are and your decisions are so much easier to make!

Take the N1 to Worcester, then head off towards Robertson on the R62. Stay on the R62 to Oudtshoorn.

Return to Cape Town via the N2.

Places to see - Barrydale, Montagu, Tredouw pass, Ronnies Sex Shop, Pumpkin Inn, hell, there's a lot to do. This will keep you busy for a week plus  :ricky:
