My final adventure ride. Huab in desolation
« on: January 03, 2007, 09:48:22 am »
Hallo to all.

I am not going to write too much regarding this trip of exploring Damaraland (Doros Crater, Desolation Valley, Huab River) except that it might be my last adventure trip   . The higher powers   :x (wife and kids) told me, no sorry, ordered me to enjoy it for the last time. I will have to become a responsible, unselfish, unadventurous, boring, rugby loving, big belly husband and father.

I will have to sell the Cruiser and get a family sedan, the tent and get a caravan, the Zonkmobile and get 4 quads with a trailer  :? . So, if any one wants to buy a TransAlp that has never seen dirt   , please call me. And, if anyone of you knows what "family motor" will be strong enough to pull a 80 square meters caravan and a 4 quad trailer, please let me know.  :(

All I know is that this might be my last adventure trip and that my presence on this forum will disappear. For I am selfish, reckless, irresponsible, bla-bla-bla-bla.... And the list goes on. Just wonder what the wives and kids of all the missionaries, men working overseas, truck drivers, men that return home after 10 at night, say regarding them? Shit!

So, before boring everybody with my demise, here is the trip. I will put up the photos as I get time, so please be patient.

I left Pretoria 11:00 am and reached Kang in Botswana at 17:00. I slept there at the Kang Ultra Stop Lodge (Cabin) (S23 40 53.3 E22 45 58.3).

At Okahandja Rest Camp, now called Kings Highway Rest camp (S21 59 58.1 E16 55 19.2). Very nice place with a swimming pool. The second day.

My new travel companion. Meet Guru.

On the way to the Aba-Huab camp (S20 32 55.9 E14 23 54.6). Just after the petrified forest after Khorixas (S20 22 21.5 E14 57 49.0)

Beautiful rock hill (S20 31 46.1 E14 23 49.2)

Next to the rock hill

A little gecko or something.

More than one way to use Tauratech's straps.

The view from my camping spot.

I really fell in love with this tree. Beautiful!!!

Looking back at my camping spot, standing in the Huab river bed. I used this camping spot while I scouted the area for about 3 days.

Wilddogs looking over the dry river bed. I believe this might be the first Wilddog shirt in Damara.

Don't go away. more to come ...

Hey Zonk sorry to hear about your "problem" :( Bliksem it's a bit drastic I think... shame not allowed to be your own man (no bad intentions) sorry dude!

Your report is quite cool nice pictures it must be an experience to camp there in the middle of nowhere, where you can "hear" the silence, do you have a gps map of the route you did?

As per normal Zonk, the pics look simply awesome.

I think the move to sell the bike just because you can't go and do 10 day solo trips is a bit drastic as well. Come on Zonks, the forum would not be the same without you.....

now onto the more pressing problem ...keep the bike damnit.... dont be whipped into submission.

Fortunately my wife understands that from time to time its healthy for me to spend time with other men riding motorcycles and being a man...

Zonk, quick, get your wife on a bike!!! Let her see for herself just what fun it is. Maybe she won't want to deprive you of that.

Anyway, nice report. You are/were lucky to have been able to do it. I really struggle to get away for more than a morning ride, the wife only allows one or two sleep over trips per year and then it still costs me plenty. Like a weekend for her at the Spa....
Don't look back, that's not where you're going.

O yes, the map. Sorry

On my way to the Rendezvous Village (S20 27 35.1 E14 15 52.7). This was actually after a beer at Twyfelfontein Lodge (S20 34 13.1 E14 22 12.7). Sorry, It might have been a few beers.

On the way to the De Riet Farm

A yard next to the De Riet farm (S20 28 07.7 E14 11 11.3). Now the De Riet farm is not just a farm. It is a comunity of old Riemvasmakers that moved to Nam many moons ago.

De Riet Village

Just after the De Riet Village, going down to the Huab river bed (yes, dry. I thought Sharkie might enjoy riding these dry river beds. It's like De Wild, it just never stops). In the middle in the back you can start seeing the river bed. Freaken dry and very warm.

And the best pic of them all. A Wilddog shirt slam bang in the middle of Desolution Valley.

Some more pics on the way to Huab river bed. I actually could have ride from my camp spot in the river bed, but 200km+ in that sand, NO way? Ask anybody that?s been in dry river beds, not nice. So I only did about 50km. And, no photos. Anybody that knows me knows that I am a very scared person and especially for Elephants (and lions). Elephants were everywhere. You see, I have been chased by one a few years back while in the Land Cruiser. It is not a nice feeling and being on my own, I reckoned it saver to keep on moving. I did stop once for water break, but that later.

OK, later some more ...

Another thing just to show you how EZ it is to travel Namibia. I took no food with me. In 7 days, I had 2 tins of Bully Beef and around 40 Zamaleck and Tafel courts. 60% of my budget went to beer. I actually counted this time and could not believe the consumption in the Namibian heat. You don't even feel it. Only the 3 days inside and about the Crater did I not have beer, or people, or animals, or food, or ... shit from family. Oops, I should not have said that.
