My first race - HOLY SHIT !!!
« on: January 22, 2010, 04:44:01 pm »
I bought a very neat KDX200 towards end of last year 'cos I wanted to race in the local off road and enduro series this year

Well tomorrow is my first race ever - it is an off road race in Caledon

I have taken out a regional MSA license and am entered in the 200cc class - there are 25 riders in my class

The race is 3 hours + 1 lap - each lap is about 30 km - I have no idea of how fast it will be and how long each lap will take - it is gonna be the longest single time I have spent on the bike

Wish me luck

Remember that your first race should be ridden to finish! The rest comes in later races, good luck! :thumleft:

I'm back home and quite stiff and sore today - not to mention my trusty little bike

I have never done something so physically exhausting and energy sapping in all my life - makes the Argus and the Karoo to Coast MTB race look like a little warm up !

I was told that an off road race is quite fast and flat out on open ground and an enduro is slow and technical. Well yesterdays off road race in Caledon was very technical - some very tight and winding tracks through trees and sandy rocky river beds then off to some open farm roads with a very loose, rutted and stoney surface.

Up steep hills, down even steeper ones, through dongas, serious off camber roads and one killer hill that was super steep and super loose with lots of rocks and fallen motorbikes in the way just to make it more difficult, all the while dressed in full MX gear with ballistic jacket and leatt brace in 35 degree plus weather.

This hill proved to be my nemesis - took me an hour to get up after several attempts - soul destroying stuff when other guys just seem to float up there. The lap was 18 km long - the first one took me 1 hr 40 min and the second one took only 40 min. The top okes were lapping in 25 min and literally skrik for niks.

Halfway through the second lap I fell off on one of the off camber slopes and seriously sprained my left wrist, which quickly swelled up, and banged my right knee quite hard, even with knee guards on. I had to complete the lap, in much pain, because there are no detours where you can take a short cut. I retired at the end of my second lap after 2 1/2 hours into the 3 hr race, totally spent but with a huge smile - what an experience !

I have ridden big DS bikes for a good few years in some very challenging terrain BUT nothing compares to this. A week long bike trip at a cruising pace may seem rough and tough but try and do that at race pace with almost 200 riders all fighting for the same piece of gravel.  I have huge new found respect for anybody who does this kind of racing, even on a club level.

I was concerned that my little KDX200 may not be up to the task - the bike is over 20 years old in its design and was surrounded by fancy Yammies, KTM's, TM's, Aprilia 450's, BMW 450's, Hondas and many more BUT the little KDX performed faultlessly - it was me who was the weak link. There were a few guys on 125's that made me, and many others on bigger bikes, look silly.
This is a sport where experience and technical skill, mixed with some serious level of fitness, wins the day.

The next event is an enduro in Bredasdorp on 13 March - I have just less than 2 months to get much fitter, lose weight and improve my skills big time.

My goal for the next race is to ride for the full 3 hours and try not to fall off and break myself or the bike.

Wow! Sounds great better give your wrist time to heal before the next race! :)
bike; transalp 400! there are old bikers and bold bikers! but no, old bold bikers!!!
Studys have shown that motorcycleing requires more decisions per second, and more data proccesing than nearly any other common activity or sport. the reactions and accurate decision makeing abilities, have been likened to the reactions of fighter pilots!
