Must say that I had to tackle that hill a few times. Think the first or second time there was about 30 guys standing lÍing and just trying all sorts of rediculous stuff.
Moerse fun....

I was seriously thinking of entering into an off-road race this year, but after what you've gone through, I'll have to consider!

Sounds so familiar. I also nearly died in my first race, again nearly died in my second race, then nearly died in my third race, then . . . but I absolutely love it.

Well done for doing it Ė at some stage it must get easier!

I had so much sympthaty for the first timers stuck on that hill as it was a nasty bugger.

I am so glad you took the whole "anybody can ride an offroad" issue out here they are still no walk in the park!!!!!

Just as a matter of interest, what sort of training do you have to do to prepare to finish a race like this?

eg.

How many times a week should you be on the bike? This could prove troublesome if you live quite a distance from a training track.
How many days a week in the gym?
Any cross training, like mountainbiking etc?

Thx

If you can ride an offroad bike for 4 hours without stopping, you are fit enough.

Mountainbiking helps a lot, cardio fitness is very important and then lots of bike time to build the specific muscles.

Awesome thread this.
I am also looking at getting into enduros after July. This has inspired me a bit more. What year model is your KDX?

TRAINING

I have tried to ride my bike for at least 2 hours a week since I got it - not easy with work schedule and the fact that I live in Lakeside in Cape Town so I am very far from any suitable training grounds.

I go to gym three times a week and also do some mountain biking and road cycling at least once a week

I do think that the best training is actually riding the bike as much as you can and as often as you can

Apparently they call it TITS - Time In The Saddle

All I know is that I need lots more of it if I ever want to get anywhere in this sport
The older I get the faster I was

Trial bike riding has also helped me so much.
I can stand for longer and big obstacles are getting easier.

Agree totaly. The trial riding has just slowed things down for me and I have more time to think and am more confident with technical things. (Even though I went over the bars yesterday on a 1.5 m drop, footpeg destroyed me right between the boot and knee guard :imaposer: )
Hence the urge to take it to a faster level. I will alsways stick with trials though. All my mates are doing enduros and I am getting tempted. Looking for KDX to start off with, no rush though I am looking for a good deal.

My KDX is one of the last and was built in 2006 but only sold and registered in 2007 so the papers say it is an 07 model (but its actually an 06)

It was one of the "Russel Campbell / Mike Hopkins Specials" that came with the full KX fender kit and number board, FMF Gnarly pipe, bigger jet in carb - the bike really runs well and you can absolutely rev the tits off it and it feels like it never runs out of steam

I got all the original parts with it that are unused and still in boxes.

So far I have not spent a single cent on fixing anything or replacing stuff - just mix oil and petrol and ride and clean the air filter regularly and change gearbox oil every month or two

Weighs 101 kg so is rather light - but doesn't feel light when you have to pick it up and drag it like I had to do on Saturday

The older I get the faster I was

Your bike is 100% the bike to ride....and now I know who you are, congrats.

That second hill, it was as if some gaint hand took a pozy of dirtbikes and flung it against the hillside.

Bredasdorp, if it rains, you are going to cry...at least Wellington (27th March) is "easy" enough to sucker you in for the remainder of the year..

See you there!

Thank you all for your positive comments and words of encouragement !!!

I received the results of Saturday's race via e-mail this afternoon and I am highly embaressed to tell you all that I finished stone last in my class! The second last rider did double my distance and completed 4 laps to my 2 - sies man !!!

My sights are firmly set on the 2 races in March - an enduro in B'dorp on the 13th and another off roader in Wellington on the 27th

My goal for the next 2 races is to ride for the full 3 hours and be classed as a finisher and not a DNF like I got on Saturday

This is going to be the hardest physical thing I have ever done - EINA !
