Thank you all for your positive comments and words of encouragement !!!

I received the results of Saturday's race via e-mail this afternoon and I am highly embaressed to tell you all that I finished stone last in my class! The second last rider did double my distance and completed 4 laps to my 2 - sies man !!!

My sights are firmly set on the 2 races in March - an enduro in B'dorp on the 13th and another off roader in Wellington on the 27th

My goal for the next 2 races is to ride for the full 3 hours and be classed as a finisher and not a DNF like I got on Saturday

This is going to be the hardest physical thing I have ever done - EINA !

What you are doing takes balls and gives inspiration to us, keep going!
Don’t worry about things that aren’t, worry about things that are and your decisions are so much easier to make!

Very nice post, PFJ! It is huge fun, but as you say, very tiring. We will come and support you at Bredasdorp.

Thats great stuff Justin, let us know how your next one goes.

A general question: How do you go about getting that licence?

First you must join a club that is affiliated to MSA - I joined CSMX (who organise the enduros) and WPATV (who organise the off road races) - the club will then give you a letter showing proof of membership - club fees are usually R400 per year

Motorsport South Africa racing license application forms can be downloaded / completed on their website - just google MSA cos I forgot the site address.

If you live in a city with a racing circuit (like Cape Town has Killarney) then MSA will probably have an office there where you can and in your forms and get your card license straight away - this is what I did.

Complete the form, pay the money and voila you have a license - very easy no test required

Once you have your license you then aply to Cindy at MSA head office in JHB for your racing number.

There are various grades of licenses you can get from club, regional, national to international

The club license is R300 for the year and permits you to race in club events only. I bought a regional off road license for R650 which allows me to race in all off road and enduro events up to and including regional status - i.e. should I "win" the championship (rather unlikely) I would be awarded WP colours for motorsport.

The expensive bit is Medical Insurance which costs about R1000 for R100 000 worth of cover. You don't need this if your medical aid covers you for extreme sports (like mine - I am with Discovery) but you do need written proof of your medical aid cover when taking out the license.

It all sounds like a lot of admin but I suppose it is all there to control and govern the sport and ultimately make it more safe for all.
The older I get the faster I was

Thanks very much for your detailed response. Im in the envious of position of living in a country with absolutely awesome riding, but not much rally/enduro going on. There is some MX stuff, but it appears getting a FIM licence here is difficult as an expat.

My intention is to enter into at lest one intl. rally this year but I need to start with the licencing obviously. Seeing as youre new to this lot as well, I´m going to be watching your progress with great interest.

Hi Guys. First time on the forum. But I have been racing enduros since 2003.
Powerflow Justin, last weeks off road was a rather difficult one but it was also fun. The shorter laps are great for the spectators and I wish they had told the spectators to go to that nasty little hill climb.
I really felt for the guys lying around on that hill in the baking sun, but I also noted some really basic mistakes being made and if you follow the basic rules you would make your life a whole lot easier.
After reading all your posts it sounds like there are many riders out there that want to attempt a race but just dont have the courage. You really should give it a go cause it offers you the opportunity to ride at new places and it is the only way you going to lift your game. In the begining it is better to team up with a mate and then treat it like a Sunday outride.
Good luck.

BB, maybe you should investigate the International license, also available from MSA.

Well done - the thing is, you got off your ass and did it !!!

I'm sweating through the same thing
Last year I rode my first (and only) race - The First EWXC at Heidelberg in GP. Now I had been training and riding for about 10 weekends before the race - I felt that I was ready. Sure, it was rather technical - but only 15km per lap - Well I did one lap in an hour and I nearly DIED !!!

Then I donner off a mountain, loose a bit of nerve, and do not race the rest of the year

So this year I enter the AMSOIL Gauteng series and the first race is in late January. Admittedly, an easier track - but I manage 2 laps at approx 37km each - there we now have 74km (and 2 laps)

With this behind me, I've entered the Ermelo 400. I've got to do 2 laps of 110km each  :o :o :o
We will see!!  :mwink: - but at least I'm going to try it. If I do 100km - I'll be happy !!  :thumleft:

As a friend once said - "slowly..., slowly.. catch the monkey"

GOOD LUCK for the next one

I can agree with you Plothond. Same here. Entered a race last year. 3 x 35km laps. Managed 2

Later entered a race 3 x 44. I managed all three approx 140km and did it in 3 hrs. Both races was on RMZ 450.

The bug has bitten. Got MSA lic yesterday. Will entering EWXC and some KZN races in 2010. Steady gets us there.

All who are new, keep on keeping on

Probably the most good you can do in your run-up to a race.

The reason the Europeans dominate the Enduro scene, loops are becoming tighter, more technical, and they all cross train on trails bikes...the one thing I am looking for (on a limited budget)
