I WANNA START RACING!
« on: January 28, 2010, 11:41:58 am »
OK, been on a bike for a while now... but, like Ricky Bobby says: I WANNA GO FAST!

SO, I am thinking about Enduro racing.

I have read a few threads on this sub-board, but haven't found basic info that i need:
  • What is the minimum $$$ that is required to start out with?
  • Hehe, is it possible to race on one of those 250cc pitbikes, or are they way to tame? (I haven't ridden one yet)
From this day to the ending of the world, we in it shall be remembered. We lucky few. We band of brothers. For he who today sheds his blood with me, shall be my brother.

If you "Wanna go fast" then the offroad scene is more what you are after.

I think a pitbike would get F#cked up in every single possible way in any of the events.

In terms of costs, total thumbsuck, but I would guess:

Bike 20-25k
Kit 5-10k
licensing etc 1-1.5k

assuming you have a bakkie or trailor to transport the bike...
Alcohol is essentially nature’s Leatt Brace – with it, you might not be able to move worth sh*t, but you can take a slam or two and be no worse for the wear.

Thanks GRIM.

What is the BIG difference between offroad and Enduro? Do offroad races contain very technical parts as well, or is it just open racing on gravel roads ect...?

In terms of kit, I have: Helmet, Thor knee braces, Thor chest, back and shoulder protection. Do I HAVE to have a Leatt brace? Do I HAVE to have MX boots instead of my O'Niell boots? What other gear would be required?

Problem is, Ride something like a KX250F and then a 250 pit bike. They are completely different beasts! Pit bike with a good rider will stick with a proper one if a unskilled rider is onboard.

my 2c, get a secondhand bike and fix it up. they break anyhoo, whether you rebuild now or later, you will eventually.
KTM 990 - Wiff twee pype and loud A-F!

I'm not a hooligan, my throttle grip got stuck! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Kreef as they say: "Dress for the fall" The right gear makes life safer, and more enjoyable. Boots are plenty important. You can get yourself into nasties and you can't walk the rest of your life on your hands. Leatt brace is no must have accoring to the rules but you don't want to ride a wheel cahir in your sencond enduro / off road. Inevitably your will come off on an off road at some point, whether it be at slow or high speed. All I can say it is worth having the right kit. One should actually first buy all the kit before you buy a bike because once you have the bike you tend to skimp on the gear. Look out for guys selling kit 2nd hand on this forum and e-dirt. I got a deal the other day on e-dirt buying full kit and more including leatt brace, Alpine star mx boots, shirts & pants and extra pair of boots, goggles and kit bag for R 4700. The kit is all classified as just less than new.

Look out and you will find stuff. Get a bike and not a pit bike. Pit bikes are just what it says, a pit bike. I have seen a few KDX 200 on this forum that looks good

Hope you come right and just enjoy

I hear the WFO races in Natal are a good way to start.
Try one of them for your first.

Ok, I am doing enduro racing, and can help you with a bit of info. I started 6 years ago and started with nothing.
the forum to go to is www.cape-enduro.co.za

Depending on your weight, riding style, wallet and experience, decide on a bike.

If you are a beginner, stay away from any MX bike, their suspension is too hard, they don't have electric start, which, as a novice, you will need a lot and
their gearing is not nice.

Most beginners start with a KDX200. but then find it too weak in a year or two's time.

I would start with something like a 4stroke 250. Something like a WR250 if you weigh less than 80kgs. otherwise, go for a 450.
It is a big bike, but the power is smooth and controllable.

A second hand bike can cost you from 30k to 50k. Take my advise on a second hand bike: buy one from someone you know has looked after it.  Otherwise, you will wish you bought a new one once it starts breaking down. This can be expensive.

Kit: I will state prices on new items, first the entry level and then top of range (more or less)

Helmet R700/R6000
Gloves R300/R1000
Riding shirt R350/R650
Riding pants R500/1600
Boots R1800/R9000
Kidney belt R300/R750
Knee braces R2500/R15000
Neck brace R2800/R4800
Chest protector R600/R1500

Now surely you will think that you dont need all of this, but I have come off badly and was saved by my kit numerous times.

Unfortunately, this is an extremely expensive sport.

Then:
To be able to race, you need to buy a racing license from MSA, clublicense as well
Club msa license:R350 per year
Cheapest club to join: endoroworld R150 per year

Then, racing entry: R450 per race.

but..... if you can afford it, it is absolutely worth it!!!

Hehehehehh  +100000000000

I totally agree , to do a WFO/ finish is not easy.

The WFO races is the best of them all, they are very well organized and the terrain is awesome!!!

If a rider is a newbie to WFO, enter the X class. One lap only......
