Dakar - Strange clunking sound coming from the back wheel...
« on: February 02, 2010, 01:34:00 pm »
Hi there,

I have a strange clunking sound that seems to come from the back wheel somewhere...maybe the front sprocket but i doubt it.

Happens when I pull away in first gear but it doesn't happen all the time?
Seems to do it when it starts delivering power to the back wheel...or on a incline
when you pull away twisting it a bit more vigorously....   ???

Doesn't last long...I would say when you get to 3500 rpm it's gone.
Almost like pulling away in second gear except the noise is from the back wheel.

I took it for a 10K service at BMW in Pretoors and also had them change the
tyres...
I don't think it's wheel bearings as the wheel doesn't have any play on it when you wiggle it.

Any suggestions/idea's would be appreciated!
Will go around the block this afternoon without helmet to hear if I can hear better...!

Thanxs!

Could be the swing arm bearing.

I also had that clunk sound, and also not always.

Remove the rear wheel and then the sprocket and check the rubber blocks in the hub.
I came here to drink milk and kick arse!  And i've just finished my milk.

@Cloudgazer
So the bearing could be in need of replacement or just some grease?
Excuse my ignorance but does the bearing sit in the front part of the swing arm?
Also, how critical is it to fix?
All this assuming that it is the swing arm bearing!   ::)

@Jughead
Could they be worn out allready?

the bearing is at the front of the swing arm, so will sound like it's coming from front sprocket.

Mine had to be replaced, because the factory in germany did not put in enough lube/grease.

I could be wrong, but if it's making a noise it's probably damaged and will need to be replaced.

Thanxs CloudGazer....will have a proper listen this afternoon.
Might also mention that we were in Golden Gate over the weekend and I rode through some streams that formed over the road so got the bike pretty wet.
Noise started today...

Oh ok!  That's partly why there are forums like this!!  Cause somewhere somebody will know what the problem is without you being ripped of by the dealers!   >:(

Will check out the rubbers, thanks Renier!

Will also go check out that thread, thanks Kykdaar!  Don't think it's a big problem, just hard to figure out exactly what it is!

Also check that the damper rubbers have been put back correctly, some moegoe appy might have re-assembled it wrong, you say they changed tyres, so the wheels were off.
If you can keep your head in the midst of all this confusion, you don't understand the situation!

They may even have left 1 or 2 out!

Dry chain / farked chain / loose chain also makes em funny noises.. especially when pulling away..

Hijack:
Bobnob I experienced that on the Vara thats why I replaced the chain, however I did come clean asking for advice regarding chain life & replacement  :ricky:
O and I replaced the chain with an X-ring as recommend..

Bad link in the chain or a bent tooth in the sprocket could also make a noise under acceleration.

Hey dudes!

Went hom yesterday and had a listen with the helmet of.

True as Bob!  Noise was from the chain.  Cleaned it and put some chain lube
on and all is well!!   ;D

But I think the chain is farked like Tonteldoos suggest because I cleaned and
used wax for the weekend to Clarens.
We did get wet and so on but it seems either it's k@k wax or the chain is on it's end cause it dries out so soon?  ???

Got 12K on the bike and I assume it's still the original chain.
Is it time for a new chain and sprocket?

Also, it sounds like you guys suggest the X-ring?

Thanxs for the help and I'm glad my boney is happy again!  :ricky:

So you reckon it's time for a new chain/sprocket set then?

Possibly.
Also, there is no need for an x-ring... unless you don't mind spending the money.

The OEM chain/sprockets on my Dakar lasted 13k, and I think the first owner did not ride it in sand/mud/water that often. I ride more dirt than tar and quite a lof of mud/water (Western Cape) - my 2nd chain/sprockets (DID X-ring) lasted only 7.5k.
