Last week I posted on Planning a ride that I want to ride Breedtsnek. Quite a few guys raised their hands to show interest.
I thought it would be nice to get a whole range of terrain covered in one trip. Ranging from tar, smooth gravel, little technical and cross country. Leo sent me his Breedtsnek trip and I planned my trip around that.
Then Gundagunda sent me a suggestion of including part of the West Canal Ride as well. This was a good idea..... except I don't have GPS, and normally ride by trial and error and Gunda couldn't join us. Also, I have never been to the parts on the route. So :dontknow:,
The whole week the count of bikes that would be joining went up and down, and down and up. But by Saturday late Nite, I counted ten bikes that would make the trip. And no one had the trip on GPS downloaded. And I would have to lead the group not knowing where the hell I am.
This is the basic map I took with me to navigate 10 bikes around two mountains and a canal route, which I have never seen before.
Seriously time for me to buy a GPS.
Sunday morning Deamon and Grantis met up with me at my house.
We would be joining up the fellow WD's at the Cnr of Wierda and Voortrekker rd. On my arrival, a few dogs already stood there waiting. To my great relief, Gunda's client cancelled their sunday meeting and he was the 11th Rider to join the group for the day. Lucky Number (e)Leven for me. He knew the route and had his GPS with him.
Meeting Spot with a mix of bikes.
Mudcakeface made all of us drool over his 900 Triumph Scrambler. What a beaty!
Sharing a few laughs and discussing bikes.
We took the Voortrekker Road towards Pretoria West past Swartkops Raceway. Then turned left and drove through Erasmia to Schurweberg.
Good dirt road riding.
Gunda playing sweeper for me. This is where he is most comfortable.
We had a good stretch of Dirt road, until we got to a bit of a water crossing. I plunged straight in, crossed to the other side and got a few good shots. Jaymoer was the cautious one who investigated the ruts below the water first, and then guided the other bikes through.
Jay making it look easy on the KTM 990. The man can ride :ricky:!
Just after the water crossing, we were shaking most of the water out of our boots. Nothing like water in the boots to spice up your ride.
Squish squish.
We drove through Hartbeespoortdam, and through the tunnel. Then we turned left before the Crocodile River. Gunda took the lead from here. Now anybody who knows Gunda, will tell you he is a slow-rider and prefers to be the sweeper. But seeing as Gunda was the only one who had the track on his GPS, he was nominated to lead us on the west Canal ride. Jaymoer is more of a fast rider, and he is used to leading the pack. But Gunda sent him to the back with his orange headlight to be the sweeper. He was moaning and mumbling about that so hard, we heard him up front of the pack. ot:
Gundagunda was the perfect lead rider for this leg of our trip. We took it slow and easy, from good gravel, to ruts. Then two track cross country riding and through the little townships on the way. It was so much fun, and so relaxed,no one stopped for photo’s for quite some time. Eventually, we got off the Canal route and joined up with the railway Service route between Marikana and Mooinooi.
Here Jan is telling us a story about a farmer who drank all of his cattle. Literally. Watch Gunda's expression
Here he is confronting Gunda for not believing his story.
Along the railway service track we again did some cross country riding through the long grass. This time I stopped and got a few photo’s. The road was so overgrown here, that we thought we hit a dead end, but Gunda’s GPS showed we had to go through a big bush. On the other side we got seriously overgrown two-track road, leading us all the way to the tar road, that took us South to Mooinooi.
Sorry about the glove that got in the way.
Past Mooinooi, we again turned of South towards Breedsnek. We stopped outside the Kromrivier Winkel and had a quick drink and more laughs.
The legendary JIMBO. The man with a bike in every country. I drove behind a bit. He lifts that Suzuki like nothing and JUMPS across 1m ruts! What a Guy! :thumleft:
Deamon
Gee S displaying proper riding gear.... and sandwiches.
Then Jan got stung by a bee on his little (not so little) finger, and he is allergic to bee stings. So he took his pills, and we had to wait and see if he was going to make it or not.
Hey julle! Nou het ek groot K@K!
Hier het hy my geklits!
On top of Breedsnek Jan was still contemplating whether or not he was gonna live.
Now we were ready for Breedtsnek. :ricky: :ricky:
Here Jaymoer had enough of sweeping and he turned the KTM’s ear and sped up the mountain to finish in first place. :mwink:
The rest of the group followed. Each at his own pace climbing the rocky sections and deep ruts as best they could. This is quite a technical ride for the intermediate biker, but easy for the more skilled.
Grantis doing okay
Clutch having no problems at all on the 990. Looks easy.
One of these days, Jan will stand and ride it up
JD Dakar practising sudden braking tips and trying to hold on. ot:
Just look at that view from the top
Top of breedsnek, we met up with Jules and Li.
Here Jay is complaining again about how he had to ride sweeper all the time.
From here we went down Breedtsnek, with Jules and Jay now leading the group for the last leg of our trip. We were to have lunch at Van Gaalen’s Kaas Fabrieken. Gunda was sweeping for us again.
We got some smooth to intermediate gravel, and everybody could ride at their own pace.
JD Dakar making dust and enjoying himself
The blue girl waiting impatiently Note the broken topbox.
Grantis giving the international biker salute
Mudcakeface. You just know he is smiling, yeah?
Li showing her class.
Jan was quite nervous when we started this ride. By the time this photo was taken, he was running full taps on the gravel. I underestimated his speed and almost missed him completely!!
.. and the sweeper coming in last place. :thumleft:
Arriving at Van Gaalens Kaas Fabrieken, a lot of smiley faces were to been seen all around.
Jaymoer happy with the pace he set.
JD Dakar. HONGER!!!
Jules and Gunda swapped their Tenere's to see what difference BLING can make to a bike. Discussions followed.
Mudcakeface doing his name justice.
Aaah, at last: LUNCH.
Some guys headed straight home, and skipped lunch. Other hung around a bit and had a beer or two. :mwink: :thumleft:
Afterwards, everybody geared up and found their own way home.
Thanks for a wonderful ride, gentelmen and lady. And special thanks to Gunda for navigating, and Jay for sweeping. Thanks all. See you at the FS Bash!!
