DR650 vs KLR650 .... WD input please?
« on: April 07, 2010, 08:10:10 am »
My good neighbour is now drooling over DS bikes.

Last night he said he nearly bought a KLR - something however stopped him... but he mentioned a price of around R59k?

I know LeCap will give his input, but I have advised my mate to look at the DR650 as well.

I read somewhere that there are huge deals on at the moment..................... any advise on the two bikes and best pricing/deals would be appreciated. Seems this bloke will buy before the weekend!

my 2 cents worth an others will have other opinions...

The DR is far better offroad and is the more reliable of the 2 ......

however the flip side of the coin is that if you are going to tour with the bike the KLR is probably the better option ...

So if touring going to be done then the klr

if not or seldom then the DR is the machine to have.... although the DR can be made tourable its going to add to the cost

Dr also feels much lighter than my klr does, and the smaller size quite appeals to me. Don't know much about highway touring though, but methinks with a lekker screen one could go far

Blazes said he had some new DRs for R55K.  That's a hell of a good deal!  I think the DR is a great bike - it won't set the world on fire, but it's noob-friendly, very capable and reliable.
The KLR is a good bike.  There were some that were problematic, and they all need lots of Loctite.  The bigger tank and fairing make it better for touring.  In the hands of a skilled rider it can go anywhere.

Especially if you upgrade the suspension... mine is like a new bike now! :thumleft:

more or less equivalent power output.

the reason i say no compatrison is:
every nut bolt and screw on the dr is better quality - just check out the chain tightening mechanisms on both bikes.
dr has better suspension
dr is lighter and feels much smaller
dr is much more happy offroad than the klr
dr is almost completely fall proof.
dr neads less modifications to make it acceptable (no doohickey, rear subframe)
dr is much easier to work on - MUCH EASIER.
dr does not use a drop of oil
dr doesn't get a tweetie exhaust,  it's exhaust is made from stainless steal - not chinese pig iron...

Current pricing of the Dr is R55k (was R67k) so definitely a bargain

Just spoke to the chaps at Suzuki South:

DR650 = R 55k
KLR650 = R 60k

I suppose R5k difference, which could be used to "bling" the DR to "DS" standards...?

Thanks a million for those that responded and advised. Fortunately Suzi South sells both bikes - so I believe that the rider has to make the final decision!

i paid 67 for my dr,  at 55,  it's just about for free.
and at 5 grand less than the klr,  it's a no brainer.

DR's are lighter and better offroad :) the only downside is the small tank (can be fixed with a pooratech solution from game for R150), screens are nice but not essential. I have dropped mine *ALOT* and its fine, its a really noob friendly bike :thumleft: I would buy a DR over the KLR at the old price, so now that its R5k less it is a serious bargain  O0 IMHO.
I crash test all of my safety gear. Do you?
