May the best of your today be the worst of your tomorrow.

My dad used to ride a Vespa in the 60's and 70's, but he doesn't want to go near a bike now.

It's a pity, as I can imagine it must be a hellova thrill to be able to share the open road with your 'ou toppie'.

Are you sure? DR500 was a 4 stroke. Yellow or white/blue?

I'm the Dad.  Both sons ride bikes. The pics are Stiv and me halfway through Baviaanskloof on the way back from Cape Town last December, and Stiv and Mark on a day tour with me around the CT peninsular.  Hope the pics load OK

My dad is 67. Grew up with BMW's in the 60's. He rides his BMW1200GT every day!

His sand riding skill are out of this world.
In a dry river bed on a KLR 650, do not take him on. Jy sal val pappie.

He simply goes flat-out and never put his foot down.

Take my advice; I don't use it anyway.

I am the first one in the family to ride motorcycle.

I bluntly ignored the repeated "doodskis op wiele" comments. I was told that while living under their roof, i shall never own a motorcycle.

So at the ripe age of 26, i bought my first bike and started riding. My kids are bike crazy, so hopefully we will have the chance to ride together one day.

But i will not be wearing leather, i will be the old toppie with the dirt from the gravel roads in my wrinkles...

My dad was so hardup when he heard of his bike, he jumped the bus and rode from PE to Ventersburg in one day. He so enjoyed it!
May the WORS be WITH you!

My old man still rides at 81. He's got a ST1300 and does as many rallies in the Cape as he can. Still sleeps on the ground in his tent. Not one for DS but he falls in mud often enough......

He got me into bikes. Put me on a RZ50 at the age of 15 and told me to ride it home, following him. At that stage I knew you used the clutch to change gears but I didn't realise you had to pull it in when you stopped. Told hom "the bloody bike is faulty!"
Closest thing you'll get to flying without leaving the ground

I'm replying on behalf of 63magic (my daughter), who must have missed this one. She
caught the bug of riding again last year, and subsequently roped me in (after an absence
of 14 years)by lending me her F650GS. When she sold it, I promptly bought my own.
We have subsequently done a number of rides together, which we enjoyed hugely. The pic is of my dad ca 1930 on an unknown model. He rode until about  1948 and owned
many bikes. Died in 1979.

My dad's fault I ride - and I love him for it! :) There's photographic evidence of me clining to his shirt on the back of some small 2-stroke when I was just a tjokker (can't even remember it...  ::) ). When we moved to the farm he waited until we were teenagers before getting us (my brother and I) a bike to learn and ride. Sadly boarding school intervened and I never learnt as much as I should have about farm riding. :( Meantime the farm got sold and my dad was bikeless  for a good many years. He still regaled me with stories of him riding De Waal drive and the gravel passes around Knysna in his youth - seems he was a bit of a hooligan in his youth! So the bug bit, but remained dormant for a long time.

Took several years into my working life before I could afford my own "real" bike - a '99 F650 Funduro. When I graduated to the 1150GSA, I passed the F650 to my dad. At 69 he now takes it out for little rides around the Free State / Western Transvaal countryside over weekend. Sadly I live in Stellenbosch, but am looking forward to the day when we can do a road trip together.

I envy you guys who have the wherewithal and opportunity to ride with your dad (and/or mom if you're lucky!). Rack up the miles, they become precious few as the years inexorably march onward...

I do not think that dying is a good idea.
Living doing something that you love is a good idea.
Living until you die is a good idea. If living happens to kill you it means you made a mistake, but we are human, and humans make mistakes, so go for it, enjoy it, live until you die, rather than not living for your whole life.

Mine is 68years this year and nowadays rides a Gomoto 200. The kick start models is a bit heavy on him nowadays, so I took over the DT180.

I have to arrange a ride with him, that is for sure.
Don't dress for the ride,........dress for the fall!

Growing up my dad had a Honda XL 250.
We did many km's together with me as pillion.
I also did my first off road riding on that bike. I was 13 then.
Dropped it once against a rock and had a dent on the fuel tank. That pissed him off.
He doesn't ride anymore.

My Dad used to ride Harley's back in the 50's
Lost his one eye in a sidecar accident with barbed wire
Will get photo of him on his Harley
Ended with a Yamaha XJ 750
Aged 73 today
Took him on a ride about three months ago, but he said he had enough, his time for that has gone by - what a shame
I will get him on my Harley one of these days
