Northern Cape must see
« on: April 30, 2010, 09:16:14 am »
I wanted to post this under "planning a ride" but I think it might prove more usefull  to everyone here.

I was told today I have 21 days I have to take before September or I'll loose it. So what would you guys suggest as places to see in the northern cape? I've never been to or know much about the area so any suggestions will be appreciated.

I had a quick look on mapsource and I was thinking about the Pretoria, Springbok, Clan William and back sort of thing. So please suggest something in this area. I prefer to see the small unusual places. Camping all the way of course.

You can always rinse the surface
but the stain will remain.

Niewoudtville en Loeriesfontein en die Waterval daar.

As jy Springbok toegaan kan jy netso wel stop by Augrabies oppad soontoe.

Solo travellers should not be considered unsociable, they are expressing their independence until they choose to do otherwise.

I would like to ride in the Kareeberg.  Saw them recently but was not in them.
Prieska! I thought it was a dump whatever ETS may be.

Whoever ETS might be.

ETS might be the only redeeming thing about Prieska.

Oe ek love die Noord Kaap. My volgende vakansie is dalk weer daar. Port Nolloth was oulik en dan gooi jy langs die Oranje rivier af na die Richtersveld. Baie mooi, gaan net in die winter want dit raak warm daar.

Hoekom nie Namibia toe nie?

From experience the bits that I enjoy could be something along the lines of

from the pretoria side head towards Groblershoop via Griekwastad (they mine semi precious gems here)
From Grobbies head towards Upington, take the louisvale road and camp at Oranjerus as base. Visit Augrabies and surrounds.
Can either now head north to Witsand or keep west towards oranjemund then south towards strandfontein.
Witsand is worth seeing but as the name implies - there is sand...
Go into Augrabies see the waterfall and all that but take time to visit the western part of the park - follow the road until you go under the Blouputs road. Almost untouched by man that area.
Also visit Blouputs - it is a true little oasis in a desert. There is nothing much to do there other than enjoy the scenery.

If you like the area you can head south just other side kakamas towards Kenhardt.
A little way SW from Kenhardt is the road towards verneukpan - nice gravel to travel around that area!!!
From verneukpan or even Kenhardt you can do the couple hundred k's through the moordenaars karoo - aiming for sutherland more or less.
There is a never enind desolation there. Stunning stuff I tell you.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in a large group...
There are only 10 kinds of people who understand binary, those who do and those who don't

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm adding all your suggestions to mapsource to see how much of the area I'd able to see in 15 days.

The quietness is great.
Spot on captain.

BlouVark, last year I drove out to Orkney just to get out of Gauteng early before the traffic started. From there I crossed the Vaal and then turned right (west) and kept to the dirt road next to the Vaal. This was fantastic riding through the farming areas that exists because of the river. The road was in excellent condition.
First night I slept over at Bloemhof dam.
Next day I kept next to the river, all the way to Douglas, where the Vaal and Orange rivers meet. By now you are getting into real desert area. Slept over at Douglas, then kept next to the river to Prieska. From there we went to the bash, but I recommend you find somewhere else to sleep. Maybe ask ETS?
Anyway, from there me and Groenie took the tar road to Upington because of Petrol availability issues. (The oke who runs the petrol station at Marydale was in church!)
The N10 is a great road if you want to take tar, otherwise there is a lot of dirt in that area - maybe visit Putsonderwater?
Anyways, from Upington we hit the dirt south of the Orange from Kanoneiland to Kuruman - a great ride. From there its just a few kilos to Augrabies, and from there you can plan your own route further (we had to come home then).
Enjoy the holiday!

What about the Hondeklipbaai area? I understand you must be totally self sufficient.

There are two areas that I really enjoy riding in. One is the Karoo (Victoria West, Loxton, Fraserburg, Sutherland, Ceres Mountains etc) and the other is KZN. Get yourself to Kimberley and then head West and then South. A big part of wandering about the Karoo is to just take your time and stop wherever you feel like. Try not to set too many targets and rush as I think you will miss on the enjoying the solitude and hospitality. Have a good ride.
