I have not managed to update myself on the rest of this thread yet. Propping myself in a upright position to write this is exhausting and painful enough.

Watty was kind enough to drop of printed copies of this thread while I was in hospital and your response completely overwhelmed me.
I suddenly felt myself surrounded by caring people ready to reach out a hand for someone they have never even met before.

Right now all I am capable of giving in return is a great, fantastic THANK YOU!!! :thumleft:, you guys don't know what it means to know that there is a safety-net of people out there that will take care when you are laying helpless and broken while you wait for the doctors to figure out the full extend of the damage.
As most of you know the initial fears of enlarge heart, displaced trachea and possible fractures on the spine were all unfounded.
I suffered a terrible nemophorax (lung punctured by broken rips and air enter the chest cavity.), still unknown number of ribs broken (more than 7) and a clean brake through the right collarbone.

Some of, if not most of this damage would have been averted if I was wearing my R7000 Ralley Pro jacket. When I wanted to fetch the jacket from the cupboard I realised all the armour is still laying in a pile on top from the last wash, and by the time I would put this lot together I would be back from the ride in anycase so I left the jacket and did not even bother with the gloves as well. :eek7:

Currently I am recovering at an old friends house in PE till I am fit enough to tackle the long road back up to Middelburg.

Eish Altus,
I once had 3 ribbetjies broken and it was hell! :eek7:
I can't imagine what you are going through!!
The problem with multiple broken ribs is if you only break one, then that one is supported by the others on either side.  Two broken at least have support from the outer ones, but multiple ones just flap in the breeze. Eina, eina.
No jokes, no coughing  - no farting!

Hey DD.

Good to see you up and writing again.  Good luck with the healing.  Ribs take a long time.  Even when the bone is mended the muscle still tends to cramp, even years after recovery.

Good luck.  And Remember ALL THE GEAR ALL THE TIME.  But I think you know that this time round.

The amount of ribs broken is not the worst of it, they broke about three inches away from the spine. Try and imagine laying on your back being moved onto ambulance stretcher, into ambulance, driven over a really bumpy two track road to hospital, onto hospital stretcher, onto x-ray bed, back onto hospital stretcher, back into ambulance for almost 400 km, (Cradock streets were the worst), onto Livingston stretcher, back to x-ray, this time sitting up with the first set not being to clear so lets do it again, back to hospital stretcher, CT scan where the assistant thought my arm on the broken side will conveniently push open the half open door. By now you should get the picture.
Every-time any major move is made it feels like someone is playing my ribs like a xylophone sending the mussels into spasm, stopping any breathing for a few heart stopping moments before the pressure slowly allowing me some shallow breaths at first till my breathing recovers fully after about a minute or so.

On top of this I picked up a bug, most likely from my wife, the ensuing cough fits I would not wish upon my worse enemy. :BangHead:

Up to now I have not being fully aware of the extent of this trust fund thing and frankly I am not sure how to respond to all this. I do not know what type of money is involved but according to Watty the amount is not insignificant.

I often feel so disappointed by humanity and it's inability to get it right, but then something like this happens giving me new hope that we are ready for the next step. Humanity is facing its biggest vise since its birth on this planet and our ability to make the right choices is the only thing standing between a happy future for our children and a very sad place to live in.

You guys get the warm fuzzy feeling inside going for-sure. :3some:
