Just an update on the road from Sinazongwe to Siyavonga. If you want to do this route do it soon they have already started to build the road from siyavonga towards sinazongwe. Alos the first two bridges from Sinazeze have been repaired but the road is still the same. I did a site inspection there about 18 months ago and one Zambian driver made it through with a two wheel drive Isuzu, with the odd tow. it was a hectic drive and took 2 full days to drive the piece from Siyavonga to sinazeze.

One thing I learned about them, is that they are attracted to certain colours, blue being their favorite colour! Lucky none of you were riding a Yami!

There, you know what I'm talking about. I do not know how to explain how bad those fuckers are. But you got it here "by far the worst fucking insect that I have ever encountered".

Ditto

The latest research done on Zebras and their stripes confirms the same "colour theory" about the tsetse flies. The flies don't like the huge contrast between black and white. The stripes apparently confuse and irritate their conical eye make-up, so they would rather go and zap something else. Same applies to horse- and other stinging flies. Zebras have developed their stripes through evolution to deter these buggers from chowing them. Clever!

MJ I've read this report just after you've originally posted it. I'm reading it again (like your other reports) and I enjoy it the same as the first time. Thank you for sharing so much detail about all the obstacles you've encountered and how to overcome these - though sometimes it seems to be just determination and guts - I am very impressed with the pontooning over rivers. This is great stuff and will surely inspire many riders reading this to venture outside the comfort zone of South African riding.

Well done to you and Hennie!

MJ - I read this report when you posted it and always wanted to read it again since I have been living in Zambia for the past couple of months and everything you describe of Zambia is spot on!

The part from Siavonga to Chirundo forms part of the 'Siavonga 400 rally' http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.199414893441909.62298.165045283545537&type=3
