Sidestand Blues

Bought this 1981 XL500R (2 weeks ago) and decided its sidestand is too short as the bike leans over too far which will cause it to topple over when parked on softish surfaces. Took it off, had a piece welded in (at the local "no bike knowledge" very cheap metal place) and refitted. Started the bike, put the sidestand out and got off to fetch my helmet. Sidestand breaks at weld, bike moers over and result is broken clutch lever, broken flicker AND now the bike will not start as fuel pisses out the carbs when the fuel line is opened. AND I must still get the stand fixed (and pay) again. Moral of the story - do not try and save a couple of bucks when it comes to your Boney. It deserves the best.
