Yamaha Super Tenere Off road - Watch this space.
« on: May 28, 2010, 08:52:29 pm »
Me (and some other weekend warriors) managed to convince the local Yamaha dealer to borrow us his brand spanking new Super Tenere and put it through its paces but this time with a set of off road knobblies on. Bike was delivered today, tomorrow they fit a set of TKC’s and Sunday gravel, sand and hopefully mud. Anyone in Northern KZN is welcome to join us, the more opinions, the better….

The group, 990s, GSA1200, Tenere 660 x 2, Super Tenere 1200.  We will also use this opportunity to recce some of the Sodwana Ride.

so we took the beasts out to play, and boy did we play, 250 Km of sand, gravel and rocks. Rest assure the ST 1200 can handle anything the GS or the KTM can handle, sand, no problem...

We did a stretch in the Umfolozi river bed and it handled the sand with no surprises. The big hoha about the weight was for nothing, it picks up easier than the KTM, very low centre of gravity. The only worry was the oil filter position, the bash plate should sort it out. ABS system works very well on gravel. Would I like One? yes...will I sell my KTM for one? never... >:D

Yamaha clearly have a winner and these bikes should sell by the crates.  :thumleft:

We never raced against each other but they say the ST is Faster than the BMW, the KTM is very fast out of the blocks, but I've fitted a smaller front sprocket, the acro's also add a little bit more power. The SE should be a monster with a acro.....

The "best bike" for the day was the 660 Tenere, light, fast, sexy....the bike not the rider.

Best rider for the day must have been OB1 on the 650 Dakkie, rode the whole day with a broken steering bearing....and road tyres.

The guy on the BMW rode through Africa twice, once on a 1100GS and later again on a 1150 GSA, the 1200GSA for the day was borrowed and he is seriously looking into buying another bike, he only had eyes for Katie... :mwink:

we only had one mishap for the day, on a rocky section, the crashbars on the ST saved the bike from any damage, not a scratch on the bike.

First time on a 990s?... >:D

Frank left the lights on on the Landie, had to jumpstart it with Orange Power... :peepwall:

Very nice!  :thumleft:

To me the ST looks so much smaller with a rider on.

The Super10 really surprised.

At first i was a little nervous about climbing on the monster. Yes, i was worried about the weight beaning a factor on two spoor tracks.
But with-in 10kms riding off road, i just felt my confidence go really fast.
I was riding on the following setting:  Traction control "2" and "Touring" mode. That was way enough power to get the back wheel siding around corners and driving through sand. Not once did i feel that the front would wash out under me.
When it can to riding on two spoor tracks and we hit soft sand, the Super10 just eats the sand up with no problems.
Climbing rocky sections, the torque of the 1200cc allows to to have full control and is very forgiving. There were a few time where i though that i would stall and the torque of the motor just pulled me though.
The general balance of the bike will surprise you at no end. No matter what rocks you need to ride around and how quickly you need to change direction. The Super 10 does not put a foot wrong.
And if it does all of this so well off road. Road riding is a dream.

Thanks Chicco for a great day riding
Always on Fire !!

I notice the crash bars on the bike, where do they attach? It seems to be another "Tuning Fork" idea?
Seems like they will only be any good for a very low speed fall?

I was privileged, to be invited along for the ride and have the opportunity to ride the ST1200. Yes, it was me who put her on the floor! The mishap had nothing to do with the ST’s ability to handle the terrain. I would have put the 660XT down in the same situation. She crushes well, hit the dirt at about 50 KM/h. I was actually very surprised that the net result of the down, was my pride and a couple of paint scratches on the bars. I am not Tarzan and it was easy enough to pick the ST of the ground.

I took over the ST1200 after doing some tar and gravel on the XT, so my first feel was that it was heavy, I must stress here, the terrain, it was not a Sunday school picnic. After adjusting to the feel and getting on the pegs, the bike grew on me. The handling in all types of terrain is superb, that include sand. The power delivery is smooth without being delayed. The ST is one comfy ride, I could ride it all day long, even in the rougher stuff and enjoy it.  “I wanna be” showed us  that the ST is definitely a do all, go everywhere big trialie. Well done Yamaha, you have put together a superb product  that is really going to do well in the market.

Thanks to Chicco and all the guys that joined us on the ride. So much fun! Can not wait for the Sodwana trip.

Will post some pics tonight.
