I have a friend, riding a R1200C BMW, on a learners license. Perfectly legal. Just no pillions.

But would you, as a dealer, let someone ride your demo with just a learners?

here are the things i know you can do with a learners (if you wrote it when you were 18 or older, which means it applies to any size bike):

> ride anywhere, without pillion
> insure your bike
> get financing for your bike

i don't see why test driving should be different

in fact, when at the ***** dealer, he asked if i had a license, i said i had a learners, and he even suggested i take my wife along on the test ride since i mentioned pillion comfort as one of my concerns

also, the *** dealer is aware of the fact that i have a learners, and we have just confirmed tomorrows test ride.

Oh...I went for a test drive at a dealer once, and they wouldn't let me take a bike without proving that I had a FULL licence (I had left my wallet, containing my licence card, at the office).

Well, so much the better for you then

Test driven my Honda without anything

A month or so back I wanted to test ride the BMW 1200 GSA, confirmed with the guy on the phone that I only have a Learners, and he said fine.
Got there the Saterday and he said no :x

what is general test-drive etiquette? how far/long can you take the bike for? i guess it differs from dealer to dealer.

Dealers carry insurance for test rides. If teir insurance covers a learner rider, then there's no reason they'll refuse. Of course, being able to prove basic riding skills would be a benefit!

As for test rides/drives, I ride till I'm convinced. If the dealer suggests I take it around the block, I'll walk away. When I bought the VStrom, I knew I would need the bike in city traffic, open roads, twisties and of course off-road. Well, you can't exactly go off-roading on a test ride so, my test ride was about 20 minutes in the city and between cars then, out of CT on the N2 and then riding the M62 towards Hout Bay. In total, I was gone for about 50 minutes - and I stuck in 10 liters of fuel.
